Quit hiring Kappas! Psyche!

Now that I have your attention, this issue is much bigger than one fraternity or even the Divine Nine. It’s about anyone who’s so tightly affiliated with a group–be it a fraternity, sorority, college, high school, religion (gasp!)–that they think that hiring their people is a flex.

One small problem with hiring the same people from the same group: GROUP THINK.

Shouts out to Gregory Parks and Rory Verrett for being great sources of insight.

To be clear, I’m not saying DON’T or NEVER hire your frat brothers or sorors.

I’m saying to consider your company, organization, or institution’s mission or business goals when making hiring decisions.

A pause, not a goodbye.
Nisa’s Lounge is taking a break until 2027.

This wasn’t an easy decision.

Over the past few months, the ground kept shifting under us. Our partner hotel in Chiado is renovating and removing its bar. Our space in Algés can no longer host live music, as the terms for working alongside our neighbors kept changing no matter how much we adjusted. And the new home we were preparing to move into was lost when the building flooded.

At the same time, I’m returning to Chicago to be with my family after the passing of my brother.

We’ve been encouraged to reinvent ourselves as a café or a listening bar. But that was never the point. Nisa’s was built to share the culture with the community: a small room where people from everywhere could come together and share culture through live music, up close.

Four years later, I believe we did that. This spring alone, more than 1,000 of you came through our doors, and so many of you kept coming back.

To the musicians: you trusted us with your sound. You played for rooms of twenty like they were rooms of two thousand, and you gave Lisbon nights it won’t forget. Nisa’s was built on your music.

To our guests: you showed up. You listened, you brought friends, and you let the music move you. Many of you became regulars, and some of you became family. You turned a small room into a community.

To my nephews: the young men who made our guest feel at home, made Nisa’s special, and called me Unc. I’ve enjoyed your growth personally, professionally and musically.

Thank you for four beautiful years.

We’ll be back in 2027. Until then,
This is where the soul of jazz lives.
