Irene White Community Healthcare Worker for EmpowerHouse SA spoke up for veterans with VASH and Section 8 housing vouchers.

San Antonio passed new protections, but loopholes remain. Some rental properties may still deny veterans with housing vouchers.

We fight again in Nov. 2026 to remove all loopholes.

No exemptions. No loopholes. No veteran voucher discrimination in San Antonio.

Today, veterans showed up for San Antonio.

Veterans shared stories of trauma, barriers, delayed care, housing instability, and what it truly means to fight for stability after service.

And despite all of that, City Council still voted against Source of Income protections for veterans.

I am deeply proud of every veteran, advocate, organization, Community Health Worker, and community member who stood with us today.

Thank you to Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones @mayorgoj and her team for standing with veterans and fighting for dignity, fairness, and access to stable housing.

Councilmembers who voted against veterans today:

District 1 – Sukh Kaur @cosa_cd1
District 3 - Phyllis Viagran @cosa_cd3
District 5 – Teri Castillo @councilwomantericastillo
District 7 – Marina Alderete Gavito @councilwoman.marina
District 8 – Ivalis Meza Gonzalez @cosa_cd8
District 9 – Misty Spears @cosa_cd9
District 10 – Marc Whyte @cosa_cd10

Today, veterans stood before City Hall asking for fair access to housing in the very city they fought to protect.

Veterans deserve better.

Irene White said it clearly:

Veterans are doing everything we ask of them.

- They secure a housing voucher.
- They receive VA support.
- They show up ready to lease.
- A large portion of the rent is guaranteed.

And still they hear: “We don’t accept vouchers.”

- That is not a credit issue.
- That is not a background issue.
- That is a policy choice that closes the door.

Military City USA must protect veterans from blanket voucher discrimination.

Support the VASH ordinance as written.
No exemptions. No loopholes.

Veterans should not be denied housing because they use a lawful voucher.

Last week, over 50 veterans, organizations, and community members showed up at City Hall.

It was a powerful reminder of what this community looks like when we stand together.

Now we are calling on you, Military City USA. 🇺🇸 @mayorgoj

Day 1 at the Disrupting Poverty Conference at Boston University with my dream team from Empower House SA! Learning from incredible community organizers and inspiring individuals with lived experiences, alongside amazing leaders like former Interim Boston Mayor Kim Janey and MA Attorney General Andrea Campbell. Feeling grateful among fellow change agents, remembering my mentor Jason's words, '#blessedandhighlyfavored'

Please join us in congratulating our incredible Community Health Worker, Irene, on graduating from Cohort 4 of the San Antonio Area Foundation Equity Fellowship! Irene has been such a bright light at Empower House, and we’re beyond proud to support her in this journey.

She shared from the heart: “I feel very blessed and fortunate to have been able to partake in this opportunity. Thank you to Empower House for your financial and moral support in this undertaking.”

And there’s more to celebrate! Irene is turning her fellowship into action with her capstone project — the Empowerment Through Planning workshop series, launching this June as part of our Empower Women program. She’ll be leading important conversations around estate planning, writing a will, and end-of-life doula services, helping make these vital resources accessible to everyone in our community.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for Irene! Let’s show her some love and appreciation for this amazing accomplishment.💗🎊🙌🏾
