Curator @jphoward_poet’s poet & curator heart is so full & grateful for our brilliant and beautiful Women Writers in Bloom Poetry Salon @womenwritebloom community! Thank you to Dr. Grisel Yolanda Acosta @grisel_y_acosta, our phenomenal feature poet, for sharing your brilliance & your new book Wild (@flowersongpress) with us today! We are so lucky and so grateful! Our open mic poets, writers & we even had a singer, were all incredible. Thanks to our volunteers for all your help and for the delicious potluck y’all. Thanks to our videographer Frankie for documenting parts of our Salon today as part of Bloom’s ongoing archival documentary project. As some folks said today, coming to a Bloom Salon is like returning home. It felt like returning home in the best possible way. Writing Through Grief with Joy As Release: A Spirit, Mind & Body Workshop Being a writer or creative person can feel isolating and the push to solely be “optimistic” can sometimes lead to dis-ease in our bodies as we internalize and hold on to feelings that feel “too heavy” to express freely. In this workshop we will acknowledge the “hard stuff.” Bring your grief, anger, heartbreak, tears and fears! We will write “heart-heavy” poetry and prose that is unapologetic and courageous as a way to access and acknowledge the “gift” of joy as our birthright. We will write collectively as well as intimately in smaller writing circles and independently. We will generate new work using the Tanka, Epistolary poetry list poetic devices as our foundational formats and combine forms to create a new form. Workshop participants will leave with one polished draft.

READING AND COCKTAIL HOUR:

Please join us for an intimate reading and cocktail hour with interdisciplinary educator and multi-modal artist, Anastacia-Renee. Anastacia-Renee will read from Here in the (Middle) of Nowhere (HarperCollins/Amistad) as well as share new work from her novel and new poems.

Anastacia-Renee will read excerpts from Here in the (Middle) of Nowhere

Anastacia-Rene (She/They) is a queer writer, educator, interdisciplinary artist, playwright, former radio host, TEDX speaker, and podcaster. She is the author of (v.) (Gramma/Black Ocean), Forget It (Black Radish); Sidenotes from the Archivist (HarperCollins/Amistad, ), and Here in the (Middle) of Nowhere (HarperCollins/Amistad). Side Notes From The Archivist was selected as one of “NYPL Best Books of 2023,” and, The American Library Associations (RUSA) “Notable Books of 2024.” Anastacia-Reneé is a recipient of the James W. Ray Distinguished Artist Award and, she was selected by NBC News as part of the list of “Queer Artist of Color Dominate 2021’s Must See LGBTQ Art Shows,” for “(Don’t Be Absurd) Alice in Parts” an installation at the Frye Art Museum. Anastacia-Reneé served as Seattle Civic Poet (2017-1019) during Seattle’s inaugural year of UNESCO status.

Naa Akua, is a Ghanaian/Bajan queer New York born poet, actor, educator, and sound-word practitioner. Akua uses the vibratory energy of sound and the intent of word as a vehicle towards healing.
