These moments capture more than just a red carpet—they capture the people who continue to shape Chicago’s culture and keep the city’s creative spirit moving forward.

🎤 Sometimes networking isn’t about how long you’re in the room. It’s about what you do with the time you have there.

I arrived at the Chicago Journalism Unity Picnic just as the group photo was wrapping up, but I’m glad I still showed up.

I had the opportunity to connect with people across journalism, media, arts and entertainment, including Cheryl Corley, Clara Rose Thornton and photographer/documentary filmmaker Ronit Bezalel. I also met Guitaro 5000 and captured some great moments along the way. 📸

Another connection was New Vision Entertainment, which extended beyond the picnic and led to me recording an appearance for its “Love Being Black” segment.

The evening was a reminder that every connection doesn’t have to start with a formal interview. Sometimes it starts with introducing yourself, having a conversation or simply being present.

Show up. Say hello. Make the connection. You never know where the conversation may continue. 🎙️

Scenes from last Thursday's Unity Picnic, an annual gathering of Chicago area journalism organizations and affinity groups. It's usually held, for better or for worse, at Promontory Point in Hyde Park (so it's more of a schlep for some than others). There was plenty of food and button-making by @aajachicago president @caseymdoza. But more than anything, it was a rare opportunity for a broader Greater Chicagoland journalism community to gather and not worry about deadlines and other stressors for a bit.

I've only been to two of those (the 2024 Unity Picnic and this one - had to miss the 2025 one because I was covering a meeting for @evanstonroundtable) So, when I was told that this Unity Picnic had the highest attendance, by far, I don't have a frame of reference - but I can believe it, because there sure were a lot of people. We even had at least one curious passerby ask what's going on (and she seemed genuinely unsure about what being a journalist even meant those days, which says -something- about our industry).

What a turnout! This year’s Chicago Journalism Unity Picnic at Promontory Point was the highest-attended annual gathering to date — bringing together some 120 journalists from diverse organizations to celebrate the collaboration and community that is the hallmark of Chicago's vibrant journalism ecosystem.

The @fieldfoundation was proud to sponsor the event co-hosted and organized by @aajachicago; @nabj_chicago; @nahj_chi; @nlgjachi; the Chicago chapters of @theofficialsaja and @transjournalists; along with @chi_journalists_association and @chiheadlineclub.

At a time when strong local journalism and trusted community connections matter more than ever, it was inspiring to see so many journalists come together to build relationships and celebrate the people who help tell Chicago’s stories. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s picnic the best yet. We look forward to continuing to work together to strengthen Chicago’s journalism community.

I had an amazing time at the @nabj_chicago networking event a couple of weeks ago. It took me a minute to warm up however, being around people with the same common interests and goals always is helpful as a creator.

Everyone was so kind and welcoming and they put on a great event. Also I found the event on threads so don’t sleep on threads for finding events.

I have been telling myself I need to find more creator friends so here is to the latter half of 2026 to do just that.

Chicago area journalists of all stripes, newbies and veterans, any and all mediums, whether you live/work in Chicago or the suburbs or the furthest reaches of the most generous definitions of "Greater Chicagoland" - if the deadlines other commitments allow, come to Promontory Point on Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. We have food, we have conversation, we don't have nearly enough opportunities to hang out and relax like this. Bring a blanket, bring a lawn chair, bring a jacket and your best journalism swag, and extra food, if you're so included.

RSVP at the link below by Friday, Aug. 28, just so we have an accurate headcount.

1 DAY.

Tomorrow, we gather.

Not simply for a gala, but for a purpose that continues long after the evening ends.

Tomorrow, we honor Jelani Day, celebrate his life, uplift his legacy, and stand together in support of the work that carries his name forward.

The 4th Annual Jelani Day Foundation Fundraising Gala is almost here, featuring renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump as our keynote speaker.

One day. One gathering. One powerful reminder:

JELANI DAY MATTERS. HIS LEGACY LIVES ON. THE WORK CONTINUES.

Tomorrow. Saturday, August 22nd.

Tickets available now. Link In The Bio

Highlights from the 2026 National Association of Black Journalists Convention @nabjofficial.
This year, I presented a packed podcasting session.
I fan girled during the preview event for Children of Blood and Bone.
I convened with skinfolk traveling together on this media journey.
I had an excellent raw meal at @loving_it_live
I rode in a @waymo for the first (2nd and 3rd) time 👀
And I returned to Atlanta, where I spent many childhood summers, where my ancestors once landed and from whence they migrated to plant their feet in The Motor City. This year I had places to go and people to see.
Congrats to all the NABJ award winners 🌺
Until next time, ATL, it’s gym shoes, not tennis shoes!
