I was humbled, grateful, tongue tied and misty eyed this last Saturday when the kind folks at the Folk Alliance Far West @folk_alliance @farwestfolk honored me with The Best Of The West Lifetime Achievement Award at their convention in Portland, Oregon.

Receiving an award like this never fails to stun me. I’ve always considered myself a denizen of the outskirts of the music business (I think a lot of artists who play folk or roots music, quiet or loud, may feel the same) so it’s always inspiring to know that someone out there is listening. It’s a nice kick in the pants to keep on doing what I’ve been doing.

For me, my songs have always dictated my career not the other way around as is normal in the music racket. If I feel like writing a blues one day and a folk ballad the next, that’s what I write. If I don’t feel like writing anything, then I don’t write. Not a roadmap to big time success but, thanks to my loyal fans and musician friends plus my overworked road crews and patient business people around me, I’ve somehow managed to survive doing what I do. I honestly cannot thank the Folk Alliance Far West enough for this incredible acknowledgement.

Speaking of “patient business people”, in this photo I’m crowning my longtime soulful, tough, kind and, yeah, very patient manager, Nancy Sefton @nancy_sefton with the Folk Alliance award backstage in Portland. She deserves it as much as I do.

Storytelling at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of how the Hags came to be.
My pal Sevie Bates wasn’t allowed in to the all boy Jaks Team, so she created her own skate gang with her crew of girls. 💫 We were just doing our thing and a half page article about us came out in the LA Weekly on the same page as a 1/2 page article on director Alan Sacks. He saw us and was blown away, smitten, inspired & driven to make a movie story about this scene he found through us. Gardia Fox told that part of the story. 🛹 He must’ve had a global vision none of us could imagine. And I am so grateful. To learn in this last week that the film Thrashin, was the ONLY skate film many countries could get ahold of at that time has touched me deeply. It became the most watched, inspiring film for so many whose hearts beat to the sound of those wheels, ykiyk, That sound still brings a smile to my face today, because in the past it meant my friends were near. What a gift to meet so many more new and renewed friends 40 yrs later thru Thrashin’ 💝 🎶 Thank You so much @robertkerbeck for recording this. #hags #jaks #80slife4ever #daggers #punk4life

In 1984 producer Alan Sacks approached the HAGS about making a movie based on our all-girl punk skateboard gang. He’d read an article about the HAGS in the LA Weekly. So, he started following us around to skate spots and punk clubs to get a “feel” for what we were doing. Next thing we knew there was a script titled “Skate Or Die”, BUT the main characters were guys, not female skaters like us. At first they gave us small parts, but those quickly disappeared, and then the title was changed to “Thrashin’”. We were little more than extras in the movie Alan Sacks said we inspired. Now it’s the 40th anniversary of Thrashin’, and @80slife4ever is hosting a huge celebration on 8/29 at the @skateboardinghalloffame. Come on down and see the HAGS — the real-life inspiration for The Daggers!
