My first time in New York for the Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIX, one of the world’s most prestigious photojournalism workshops, with 100 selected photographers from around the globe. Grateful to be part of Team Turquoise, guided by Maye-E Wong (Reuters), Eve Edelheit (The New York Times), and Nancy Borowick (photographer and NYT contributor). I also had my portfolio reviewed by David Burnett, Olivier Laurent (The Washington Post), Kiliii Yüyan (National Geographic), Sana Ullah (National Geographic Society), and Rebecca Fudala (The Wall Street Journal). Even got to hang out with David Burnett! Biggest takeaway? I need to shoot more color! After years of working mostly in black and white, I’m glad I took my team leader’s advice and squeezed in some color photographs just days before the workshop. The critiques gave me plenty to work on. The assignments challenged me in ways I hadn’t expected. I also had the opportunity to work with the Canon R5 Mark II for the first time, an impressive camera that was fun to explore. Between the assignments, honest critiques, and late nights until 3 or 4 AM, it was intense but absolutely worth it. I made some photographs I’m happy with, but more importantly, I learned where I can improve. At 50, probably one of the oldest students there, I realized how much I still have to learn. This experience will influence how I photograph, teach my own workshops, and approach the world around me. I also extended my stay to explore New York and make photographs for myself. Huge thanks to the organizers, sponsors, team leaders, editors, producers, and the entire Black Team! And to my fellow Team Turquoise photographers: Andrea Agostini, Austin Ruffer, Bill Hawthorne, Claira Tokarz, Elisa Pedrani, Emma de Castro, Hanna Wolf, HyunSeok Choi, and Joe Orovitz. Grateful for the friendships, honest critiques, and chance to be a student again. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re spotlighting the selected artists and the works they created in response to One in Eight, our Open Call hosted in collaboration with The @esteelaudercompanies Breast Cancer Campaign. The selected works will be on display at Fotografiska Berlin and Fotografiska Stockholm throughout October, bringing these personal perspectives and stories into the museum. Today’s featured image is by @nancyborowick. Cancer has a way of simplifying life down to the most essential, the most basic, the most honest. My mom felt that without her hair, without one of her breasts, her disease had left her feeling like neither a man nor a woman. She didn’t see herself in the mirror and it was a mix of terrifying and funny. She had been stripped of so much of her identity and was forced to focus entirely on the things that did bring her joy, like her family.
