Nancy Burson’s work explores identity and stereotypes. In her Androgyny series, Burson challenges the gender binary by combining portraits of men and women. Burson’s Androgyny series questions the way people experience gender, as well as the ways we perceive men, women, and gender nonconforming people.

See her work in person along with our other talented artists in their exploration of beauty, intergenerationality, activism and life across all ages.

Heft (Lower East Side, New York)
Heft Gallery is a contemporary gallery for the coming decade, experimental and non-conforming–showing art that’s made with, and addresses, the ubiquitous systems of contemporary life. Based in New York City, Heft presents exhibitions, digital releases, installations, and events focused on artists working with algorithms, artificial intelligence, procedural processes, conceptual structures, and emerging technologies. The gallery champions a new generation of creators who apply human intuition to systems-based art making–exploring how logic, code, and computational tools can become vehicles for beauty, meaning, and cultural reflection.

Trump/Putin by Nancy Burson, 2018

Part of Digital Masterpieces: From Code to Canon | Art Basel, Booth Z9

Globally circulated & fiercely debated after appearing on the cover of TIME, Trump/Putin (2018) extends Burson’s decades long use of composite portraiture to visualize political power, public anxiety, & contested systems of authority.

Executed in 2018 for the cover of TIME Magazine, Trump/Putin was inspired by the complex and controversial relationship between the two leaders, amidst growing media speculation over interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

In 1982, nearly 36 years prior, Burson would make headlines internationally with Warhead I. Created using images of five world leaders, each would be represented proportionally by the number of nuclear warheads deployable by the nation they led. Warhead I (1982) can now be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), among others.

Where Warhead I (1982) put a face to nuclear power, Trump/Putin (2018) puts a face to political entanglement.

Nancy Burson: “I’m best known as the inventor of facial morphing... I had this idea to create a machine that would age viewers... it was very new technology; no one had really done it before in the 20th century.”

Digital Masterpieces: From Code to Canon, debuting at Art Basel from June 16 – 21, 2026. Booth Z9 | Zero 10.

Nancy Burson is a pioneering artist and photographer who, in the words of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “...was among the first artists to apply digital technology to the genre of photographic portraiture.”

Today, Burson’s Composite Series can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), National Museum of American Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others.
