Cocktails are all about Connection 🍸🍹🤗

Inspired by @spiritedla we’re going to mix it up (pun intended) with #cocktailconnections challenges (have you played the NYT version, or is it just us?).  𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞:  • There are 16 cocktails in a 4 x 4 grid divided into four hidden categories 
• Figure out connections between the cocktails and group them into sets of four; grouped cocktails become a category

• Players must figure out all four categories by grouping the words in order to organize all 16 cocktails

The challenge is that there will be similarities amongst cocktails that may not lead to the right connection category (for example in this specific grid, 4+ cocktails use Gin, however, this is NOT one of the categories today).

✨ 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄…

I’ve spent the last few weeks really reflecting on all the things that transpired this past year and WOW it’s been such a blur.

This year has really been focused on resurrecting in real life events, groups, and opportunities for the purposes of providing education, planning experiences, & creating connection points🔮

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐈’𝐦 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐: 
1️⃣ 📚Published 12+ magazine articles (3x cover stories) about whisky, spirits & adventures for @bcliquorstores @thealchemistmag @ @relishandwhiskymagazine

2️⃣ 💡Created & hosted the first ever Craft BC Whisky Weekend in Vancouver and Victoria with @victoriawhiskytastings & featured 28 local distilleries’ products to over 350+ attendees

3️⃣ 📔Facilitated 40+ whisky tastings / masterclasses for 1200+ attendees

4️⃣ 🥃 Started @sipwhiskyclub in #yvr which has grown to 500 members. Most excitingly the audience has been 45-55% women @ events

5️⃣ 🍸Built cocktail menus for half a dozen events / new restaurant openings

6️⃣ 🏅Both competed in & was a judge for the national finals of cocktail competitions in Canada

7️⃣ ✈️ Spoke/Presented in Whistler, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary & Toronto

8️⃣🍹Worked with 40+ companies with @lavishliquid & @barcartbc to provide over 1000+ cocktail kits & dozens of cocktail classes

9️⃣ ✨Officially started my own boutique consultancy, SIP Spirits in January & have been full time since July 2022

🌟 BONUS: travelled to Scotland & Denver/Boulder to tour/taste at over 25 distilleries this year

Again, upon reflection, I’m so proud BUT you have to remember that with hustle comes sacrifice (& it’s not always a good thing). My social life suffered (work was my social life), my health suffered (multiple hospital / clinic visits, multiples sicknesses, chronic lower back pain, diverticular disease diagnosis), & my mental health suffered (many days with anxiety and tears).

2023 will be about redefining what “consistency” & “balance” look like while still striving to achieve, add value, and maintain authenticity.

❗𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤
 I cannot believe how much happened this past month ✨

Whether it was attending, planning, facilitating or touring, June has been full of whisk(e)y related events, tastings & making memories 👯‍♀️
 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 (𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆) 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲:
I’ve experienced unbelievable events & activations this past month, met & befriended so many like-minded individuals in the spirits space, and had the opportunity to teach what I love to numerous different groups of people (& received great reviews from attendees!). I haven’t felt this in flow & energized in a long time and it also feels great to get paid to do things I love doing.

(I’ll definitely be posting more extensive individual recaps of my trip to Denver as well as some other events in the coming week!)

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘆 (𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆) 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲:
This month has also challenged my mental & physical health a lot. Because of the not-so-secret fact that I have a full-time day job, these events consumed almost all of my evenings & weekends, making me miss writing deadlines, become non-existent as a friend, stop working out regularly, and barely slept which is NOT a sustainable routine.

In our quest for 𝕖𝕦𝕕𝕒𝕚𝕞𝕠𝕟𝕚𝕒 or sense of 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, & 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭-𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 (𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘭𝘦’𝘴 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘌𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘴) how do we find that ‘golden mean’ between deficiency & excess?  Do you challenge your boundaries to see where they break and adjust afterwards or is there a secret formula to maintain balance within boundaries? Let’s have some real talks about balance 💛✌️

💡What’s the best part of planning a whisk(e)y tasting?

➼ Bringing people together for a common purpose? 👯‍♀️

➼ Educating people on what they’re drinking and why they like to drink it? 🤓

➼ Exploring new bottles to compare and contrast their flavour profiles in a group setting? 🧐

Obviously the correct answer is:

We had such a great time at Tastemakers Volume II this week - it’s truly a labour of love that I have been experimenting and playing with (in terms of concepts, themes, engagement ideas, pricing, post event set down … glassware takes HOURS to clean and polish etc.).

Nevertheless I’m feeling so excited and grateful to be building a great community or whisk(e)y imbibers in Vancouver this year - it can be hard to make friends as an adult and these have been a great way to match make new friends with a common interest.

Held annually on the final Saturday of Islay's Festival of Music and Malt (Fèis Ìle), Ardbeg Day is a global celebration of all things Ardbeg.

This year we celebrated with a preview of ‘Ardcore’ which will be released at BC Liquor Stores on Saturday, June 18th.

Created with roasted black malt, roasted to the extreme, the tagline descriptor of this malt is it’s like ‘biting on a spiky ball’.  For me though, honestly, I found it was one of the more deserty, less medicinal releases from Ardbeg. I’d personally describe it as tasting like: 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗮 🍫☕   It brings me back to my childhood when my family would go camping and would boil a large pot of cocoa over a campfire. After being lost in conversation, stirring it would be forgotten and a burnt layer could form. But no one cared… it was delicious!

Nevertheless, thanks @whiskybry @alexmackwood & the LVMH/Charton Hobbs team for hosting a fun event this year!

This weekend I had the fortune of finally checking out @OkanaganSpirits Vernon Distillery - it’s been awhile in the making. ✨

I can’t quite remember how it all happened, but long story short, I’ve become pen pals with Jeremie & Tyler Dyck. Tyler, in particular, who is the CEO of Okanagan Spirits and President of the @craftdistillersbc for whatever reason unbeknownst to me, has always had the time of day to hop on a phone call with me to explain varying distillation and maturation practices to me. 📞

So finally going to the Distillery was kind of like if you’ve been talking to someone on Tinder for months and months and finally go on a date. The anticipation and excitement was palpable. 🤩  Tyler kindly talked to us about their history and how the distillery is focused on supporting and paying homage to the Vernon eco-system. From sourcing the grain from Coldwater, to using Virgin Oak barrels so they only used new oak or ex-Canadian whisky casks, to the impact of the climate of Vernon year-to-year on their vast array of products, there were endless stories and conversations that I wanted to have.   At the 3-hour point, I got cut off from chatting (lol) but today, am still buzzing over the genuine care and authenticity that the team has. You may love or hate their whiskies, but it’s unapologetically an authentic representation of the region.

After trying about a dozen of their products, for me, I was quite captivated by their new release, the Laird of Fintry Extra-Anejo Tequila Finish which was finished in Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo casks. The integration of rich caramellic and vanilla notes from this tequila is a marriage made in heaven with their single malt. In addition, their Aquavit and local Maraschino Liqueur were must-haves (I drink more than just whisky!).
