I downloaded kakao talk when I went to a leadership conference to Korea last year! I was definitely late to the kakao, and sometimes I miss important messages cause I never open it. But my bud @ijwkim with @krclaorg mentioned a seminar for seniors and was happy to bring unma & donate cupcakes for this finances & fraud lesson! Our community provides so many great resources & I really like how much they care for our seniors too! Thank you @jenthedefender for inviting us!

I tested out a very labor-intensive cheffy version of Tteokguk, a beef-based, rice cake soup (the rice cakes are said to resemble coins), that’s traditionally eaten for Seollal (Korean New Year). It’s a little dark in color, but it turned out better than I initially thought, haha. The scallions were from the garden, and the egg was from Piper-dotty! (And delicious kimchi from the stash that Andy @nanoom_dining gifted us)! Happy Lunar New Year!

It’s always interesting to sit at the dinner table with new people. On Friday, @nanoom_dining and @amberkoh_ visited us at our home, met the girls, and shared an amazing meal that Andy cooked for us. I was nervous, because we’d formed a friendship through emails, texting and phone conversations, and not actually ever met in real life. But the flurry of activity in kitchen and then a wonderful repast left no chance for any awkwardness. It’s impossible to share a meal and not connect and feel closer to your dining companions. And it gave us a chance to do a little planning, and set a direction for future collaborations (to happen in autumn—more on that to come)! It also felt like a “full circle” moment to me—to see my dishes and bowls full of carefully made traditional korean foods— such as kimchi and other long-fermented banchan, and to sit around a table, sharing these with Bryan and our new friends. It spoke of history both ancient and contemporary—of my ancestors, of traditions of cooking and dining, of study, of art and craft, and of friendships, relationships and family. All those things that connect people to one another, when we take the time and make the effort to sit with one another, and share a meal.

A custom order of noodle bowls and banchan dishes in French vanilla stoneware, with a finely speckled clear interior glaze. These were made for Chef Andy Lee @nanoom_dining, who creates narrative-driven dining experiences in private homes, featuring the kind of Korean food our parents and grandparents remember. Andy had asked for bowls to hold small servings of noodles—both the sort in soup, and also the sort without. After some back and forth, and some prototyping, I arrived at this relatively low, wide, rounded form, with a gentle curve at the base of the interior. He had originally asked for a flat-bottomed, and straight-sided form, but after we had discussed various ways he would utilize the bowl, I talked him into a different form, that would allow the sauce or broth to pool in the bottom, and to accommodate spoons that are typical of Korean flatware—wider and more flat than the typical shape of western soup spoons. I also made a set of small banchan (Korean side) dishes in my low-bellied form, in the same clay body and glaze combination, to complement the larger bowls. Chef Andy has a pretty diverse collection of ceramics and other tableware by a number of different artists, but I think it’s also nice to be able to repeat something within the service, to provide a bit of continuity. Even if those dining are not consciously aware of it, to see something in related forms and the same material combination brings some cohesiveness to the experience. I always think that we unconsciously perceive and crave that sort of structure within our experiences, that allows us to then better grasp the contrasts. This was a really fun project for me—to really get a chance to think about how these pieces would function and be perceived. To be both designer and maker. There can be such an element of theater and storytelling in how and what we eat, and in those objects we use to facilitate those experiences. (There are a couple extras available in the shop, link in profile).
