I recently took a terrific @naomikclement webinar to learn more about making bisque moulds, including the new-to-me concept of ring moulds. The first ring mould I made afterwards had a simpler shape, but this is the shape I REALLY wanted to try out. I didn’t remember to film the initial shaping process (!), but here’s a look at the trimming process, a necessary step to make sure it doesn’t explode in the kiln. (Normally, I build with slabs and I roll them thin so I don’t have to trim later, which makes this is all very different than my usual flow. Maybe that’s part of why I’m liking it so much?)

A little bonus!

✨✨✨
Today I taught a Drop Mold Ornament Workshop for @naomikclement Makers Spark Membership. It was so much fun and I included a bonus section that had other uses for drop molds.

✨✨✨
Here I am using my Star Ornament Drop Mold to alter and add form to a cup. The clay is still pretty wet as I stretch it outward from the inside using the form to support the clay and create those crisp starry lines.

✨✨✨
Check out my shop (https://shalyamarshstudios.com/stencils) to see all the drop mold designs.

Here's how I created this really cool mug inspired by a tree outside my front door. These will be available at the Clayworx Fall Potters Market November 21-22 and the Talbot Street Christmas Market November 28.

Shout out to Clayworx where I glaze and fire my work, as well as Naomi Clement for her online workshop "From Good to Great."

How a thrift find influenced the look. This foldable hat was a recent find & one I had to keep. Wednesdays Style Story is a collection of Vintage Indian Cotton prints, silk scarf as belt, global accessories and showcasing my hand-built lidded vessel.

Personally my foot has changed a lot over the years and changes depending on what I’m making. But you can usually tell it’s mine by the crispy lines and beveling. #reels #pottery #art

I took a pottery class yesterday from the wonderful Naomi Clement which focused on handles. Today, I was inspired to make some different forms. I am excited to try out some new handles on these new forms.

This year at NCECA I got to see many friends from my years long involvement with Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. I joined the board in 2014 after participating in a really impactful residency there in 2011 organized by @john_oles and over the years it’s a place and it’s the people that continues to support me. It a powerful thing to be able to feel like your work is impactful and helps to move an organization forward. Watershed is that for me. So here’s to all the past, present and future residents, staff, and artists of Watershed.

If you have the capacity to donate to this incredible arts organization, the link is in my bio.
