Over a long, wide-ranging conversation, the two trace the throughlines between carbon capture, soil biology, Indigenous fire stewardship, and the economics of a wine industry that will need to change if it wants healthier land and better wine.

Eric Mayer (Napachar) walks through the science of flame carbonization, from why a top-lit burn produces almost no smoke to how crushing biochar and blending it with compost boosts its benefit to the soil. Special returning guest, Charlie Toledo (Suscol Intertribal Council) speaks to the deeper context: fire as an essential, long-suppressed tool of Indigenous land stewardship, and the work of reclaiming that knowledge as the earth rebalances itself after a century of fire suppression and industrial extraction.

2025 has so many highlights to list for Marioni but here are just a few:

Our joint tasting room, @dosbar_ was named Top Tasting Room in Sonoma County by @sfchronicle_food (shoutout @esthermob ), we joined the @merchants_of_thirst distribution book to expand Marioni wines across California, we stayed local with California wine fairs & events - sharing spaces with heroes and peers: @bigwest.presents @we_could_be_zeros @s.o.r.b.e.tasting @brumairesf et al, all the parties at Dos Bar, including @gpiercemusic DJing with @kermitlynchwine and @fattedcalf, seeing all of my wife’s artworks @jessie_tattoos_you in the company of my wine for @artwalk_sonoma, my birthday at the pétanque courts as harvest wrapped, joined by old friends from @rubywinesf, discussing Marioni family history with Tom of @larson.family.winery on camera and so much more…
