The first exhibits went in around plants that were already decades old. The family's own history says every original enclosure at Caribbean Gardens was built with the removal of a single pine tree. The garden came first. In 1917 a hard freeze hit the tropical plants of botanist Henry Nehrling in central Florida, and in 1919 he moved to Naples and started over. By the end of his life it held more than 3,000 species, Gulfshore Life reported. He brought more than 300 plants into the country, the zoo says, the caladium among them, and Gulfshore Business reported you can still find caladiums at Naples Zoo today. After Nehrling died in 1929 the place went quiet for two decades. Julius Fleischmann, of the Fleischmann Yeast family, cleared the trails, dug the lakes and reopened it in 1954 as Caribbean Gardens, full of tropical birds. Then came the showman. Larry Tetzlaff, Jungle Larry, stood 6-foot-6 and had done stunt work for Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan films. He and his wife Nancy Jane, Safari Jane, found the garden on a 1967 vacation while looking for a winter home for their animals. Fleischmann wouldn't sell. After his death the couple was invited in, and on Sept. 1, 1969, the animals met the garden's guests for the first time. When the trams filled up, Larry walked people through himself, and Gulfshore Life reported those tours usually ran three times as long. In 2002 the Fleischmann heirs moved to sell the land. Two years later Collier voters said yes to a public purchase with what the zoo calls a record 73%, and the Trust for Public Land closed the $67.5 million deal the next year. The Tetzlaffs turned the zoo into a nonprofit. The old entrance was built in the 1970s for crowds under 100,000. Naples Press reported 2023 attendance above 400,000. The zoo now says it pays the salaries of 35 field staff in seven countries, from Brazil to Madagascar. Larry often said, "Conservation is the name of the game." The caladiums are still in the ground. #NaplesZoo #NaplesFL #FloridaHistory #SouthwestFlorida #WildlifeConservation

A little Halloween fun and a whole lot of community! 🎃🧡 Operation Light Shine joined thousands of attendees at the annual Boo at the Zoo in Naples, Florida, on October 17th and 18th! We loved connecting with local families, sharing resources, and helping parents and kids build safer communities together. Our table was filled with treats, fun activities for the kids, and helpful information for parents. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, said hello, and met the people behind the mission! 🧡
