📣🎶 Introducing: NuMoment

Friday 3 May – Sunday 2 June

Granary Square and the Crossing
Central Saint Martins

Time: Daily throughout May

✨We are so excited to announce the launch of Nu Moment on May 3 in the @csm_news Crossing.

Nu Moment is a temporary monument in the form of both hangout space and stage, welcoming young and emerging talent in music, dance and performance from King’s Cross and Camden, and London-wide.

🎵🎤 The installation honours the hidden artistic histories of King’s Cross, referencing the rave and clubbing scene of the 80’s and 90’s, when the area became a landmark for the production of cutting-edge sounds and free parties.

📆 Throughout May, NuMoment will be based in The Crossing and Granary Square, with a related events programme. See link in bio.

📍NuMoment is there for everyone in the King’s Cross community. It can be a space to convene or to showcase performances, a place for pop-up acts, reading and discussion groups, or just to sit and meet and have lunch.

⬆️ If you would like to host an event or performance, submit your proposal via link in bio.

📡 Local broadcaster Voices Radio has created a ‘sound collage’ for NuMoment, combining archival sounds, interviews, music samples, field recording and sound experimentations. Creating sonic links across time, the piece features past, present and future ‘Nu’ artistic scenes that have formed around music, dance and performance in the neighbourhood.

NuMoment is the culmination of the first King’s Cross @kingscrossn1c and Central Saint Martins @csm_news Artist-In-Residence, led by @xllarch of design collective The Decorators @thedecorators in collaboration with members of the social enterprise FishTank @fishtanklondon and students and graduates from @narrativeenvironments and @csm_architecture_march

@thedecorators is a collective of designers and artists, producing works in areas undergoing change, collaborating with local people to create experiences that prototype new community relations, networks and uses.

Titled Nu Moment, their project will feature a sculptural installation created for Granary Square, to showcase the talents of young people from King’s Cross and Camden, and will also temporarily unveil some of the hidden artistic histories of King’s Cross through music, dance and performance.

The party explored the edges of what it means to be sensed, measured and quantified by machines. It brought together friends of the course, current and prospective students and alumni for an evening of interactive installations, drinks and a specially sampled five-act soundtrack.

🔮 If you’re thinking of joining MA Narrative Environments in 2024, you can find out how to apply at the link in bio!

Thank you to guest tutor Ash Smith and GTA Ella Adu who joined us for this project, and to the CSM Events and Hospitality teams, the Learning Technology Support team and our Spatial Practices staff for supporting the event production.

Congratulations to Rachel Payne whose project CONSUMING LANDSCAPES @consuming_landscapes is a winner in the Green Trail Maison/0 Awards 2023!

@maisonzero @csm_news @lvmh

💚💚💚

Consuming Landscapes is an immersive audio walk through UK farmland and soilscapes which has been created to be experienced in your local supermarket.

Using the products in the supermarket as a starting point, listeners hear from farmers who produce and manage the land that has produced them. You will learn how different landscapes produce different food and in turn how the foods we consume shape the landscape.

The walk aims to highlight how the story of the land is missing from the supermarket experience, because without it, how can we understand the ecological cost of our shopping basket?

MA Narrative Environments was invited to be part of a recent exhibition of global design schools at @cafaartmuseum in Beijing!

Featured projects included…

DisEmbodied by @margaretvoy & collaborators – an audio journey through a series of spatial installations at the Barbican Centre examining how the digital representation of architecture can influence the flow of embodied experience.

Lifecode Dilemma by @f_c_ldn & collaborators – a speculative adventure that explores the emotional impact of genetic technology on individuals and families in an attempt to prepare for a future where certain medical conditions could be eradicated.

2° Café by @sowminisuresh & collaborators – a three-part spatial and virtual intervention where visitors walk through a coffee calendar to understand how climate change is impacting a daily commodity: coffee. 2° Café takes place in Kew Gardens, reflecting the research Kew have conducted over two decades on coffee and climate change.

The Happiest Land by @sherry_xiao_wei & collaborators – an experiential research space about Artificial Emotional Intelligence where participants can learn about AEI, experience its potential impact in a speculative scenario and contribute to a future vision of AEI.

Freeman by @sylvia_mingpeng & collaborators – an interactive, immersive drama that interweaves several narratives exploring the potential impacts on people’s daily lives if cryonics is successful. Freeman demonstrates the alternative realities that could be realised if human beings overcome death. It prompts the audience to suspend their disbelief, broaden their vision and consider what might happen if people do not die.

And, London 2030 – a series of films made by first year students for London Transport Museum @ltmuseum exploring sustainable futures for the city of London across four different neighbourhoods and four different scales.

"Bulay-Bulay Ng Bakla" by MA Narrative Environments alum Kulay Labitigan is open at Project Space Pilipinas, Lucban until 20 February

Regram @projectspacepilipinas: Kulay Labitigan (b.1990, Tayabas, Quezon) is a London-based Creative Talesmith from the Philippines, telling stories through the medium of illustration, experience, and narrative design.

Growing up in the tropics, his vibrant and kaleidoscopic image-making are happy allusions of his sunny childhood in the rural province and his remarkable experiences as Southeast Asian gay man living in London. This dynamic relationship of people, places, and anecdotes rouse him to explore how narrative and play could inspire human creativity. Overall, his artistic practice is a grateful rumination of how his personal history informs experience of growing, belonging, and blending to new home rendered in vivid and layered fashion.

Kulay has an MA degree in Narrative Environments from Central Saint Martins -University of the Arts London, with a bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines. Specialising in applied storytelling, he has participated in numerous arts and design exhibitions globally, and has collaboratively worked with independent and commercial brands such as Uniqlo, Microsoft, O2, Oakley, BT, and Moleskine to name a few. Presently, he splits his time between drawing and searching for the best cake and gelato in town.

SaLang#2: Kulay Labitigan "Bulay-Bulay Ng Bakla" is ongoing at Project Space Pilipinas, Lucban until 20 February 2023.

This December MA Narrative Environments’ Year 1 cohort collaboratively designed and produced a narrative party 'Mis-en-fête: Gaze'.

The quasi-choreutic event brought together friends of the course, current and prospective students and alumni for an evening of spatial stories, drinks and conversation. A series of audio-visual and edible performances played with the dynamics and reflexivity of the gaze, inviting guests to question whether they were obscured onlookers or witnessed co-creators of the environment. The design team used only found or re-used materials in the space.

It was wonderful to meet prospective students at the party. If you’re thinking of joining MA Narrative Environments you can find out how to apply at the link in bio!

Thank you to guest tutor Alexa Pollmann @peut_porter who joined the MA Narrative Environments team for this project; and to Kings Cross Estates, the CSM Events and Hospitality teams, The Learning Technology Support team and @jonmoore.csm for supporting the event production.
