Touch grass they say, but I’d rather touch an anemone.

A too short of a visit to Portland with a brief jaunt to the coast… the images, smells, and laughter still lingering in my heart and my head weeks later.

How great it is to be loved deeply—yes, by old friends and new, but also sometimes by the world itself. Creatures, plants, birds, rocks, wind and water and sun and sky… it’s all the stuff of life. What a terrible responsibility it is to be able to notice it all.

What a privilege it was to greet my home ocean. What a gift it was to be hosted, treated, and cared for by the generosity of others. And what a gift to spend time with dear friends in a city I deeply love.

These pastors are remarkable. So moved by their humility and I feel privileged to sit at their feet. Leaders are first followers, and I want to be like them as they follow Jesus.

God is moving in churches on the west coast. He is faithful in the silence between the fires of each of our lives. In wherever you are longing for restored hope and healing.

Missed being with Red Hills this morning, but it was nourishing to just “go to church”. The team at @imagodeipdx is doing an outstanding job. My buddy Pastor Chris brought a tremendous word. Kels and I left feeling delighted and refreshed. Good people serving this house!

We had the joy of hosting Sayeh Khalili at @imagodeipdx yesterday. Sayeh is a dear friend of mine, a spiritual mentor to me (and to many others), and (most famously) dad to @naseemk and husband to the great @shadikhalilirealtor.

Sayeh recited nearly half of the entire book of 1 Peter from memory to our congregation. It was powerful to hear a long portion of the Bible in this way. Scripture is meant to be heard, not just read as text. Something hits different when you just let the Word ring like that, especially with Sayeh’s careful and passionate delivery. I loved preaching a short message after a long recitation like that. It was a cool moment, especially to partner with someone like Sayeh, who I admire so much. I’d encourage you to listen to this week’s podcast and be enriched by words that have lasted for a millennia and more.

What came across to many of us listening to Sayeh, was both the Word of 1 Peter 1-2 and also the example Sayeh set by committing so much scripture to memory. Sayeh did not begin memorizing scripture to perform. He started memorizing out of desperation, during a dark period in his life. Memorizing Scripture became a lifeline for him. May it be so for all of us who claim Christ as Lord. The Bible is not an optional book of advice and scattered theological or philosophical reflections. It’s not a future-prediction prophecy manuel to understand politics. It is the very Word of God for the people of God. By it we live. In it is the message of hope every one of us can cling to. In its pages we met God—in all his glory and mystery and holiness. You won’t always immediately understand it. That’s ok. It wasn’t designed to be mastered by us. It was designed to master us, to put us under its power. I pray your 2026 begins with a fresh passion for Scripture.

Turned 38 this week. I’m filled with gratitude. Not all years and seasons are easy, but I am struck this year how wealthy I am in the things that matter. That’s the word I’ve been stuck on: wealthy. I am rich in things that matter, which is a true blessing from God.

God has blessed me with wonderful people all over. I got a window into this wealth in relationships by just what I saw these last week: family, cute kids, friends who are family and still create a scene at a nice restaurant, a loving church, wise mentors who let me crash their dinner to speak of the things that matter most, a remarkable learning community and theological mentors who still teach the good stuff, tons of people who love my kids including the world’s best nana and papou and all the aunties/uncles, a best bud who records a 4 minute song about my birthday, people who hand you good music, great books, a kind and thoughtful staff team that keeps me encouraged and energized, and a wife that is truly my best friend and favorite person to hang with any day.

I am a wealthy man. Thank you, God, for people, for relationships. It was a great week. Life can be hard and it can also be good. People matter. God is real.
