28 years later. Full circle. 💜

In 1998, I came to Washington as a CHCI intern, a gay Mexican kid from the South Side of Chicago trying to figure out where I fit.

This week, I stood on stage at the 48th Annual CHCI Gala to help welcome and introduce the newest class of CHCI interns and fellows.

That one hit differently.

The rest of the night was pure familia: Betas & Gammas, fellow CHCI alumni, a member of my intern class, interns I once supervised, longtime friends, and a few icons along the way, including my former boss Barbara Lee as well as Reps. Maxine Waters, Chuy Garcia and Adelita Grijalva. And yes, Maxwell Frost on the drums at the after-party. 🥁🔥

28 years of friendship, service, mentorship and comunidad.

CHCI opened a door for me. Now we keep holding it open for whoever comes next. 💜

Honra el pasado, inspira el futuro.

Grateful to have gotten the opportunity to see what 40 years of brotherhood, service, and leadership have shaped to be. An incredible experience with brothers across the nation that will never be forgotten.

To the next 40. LB 💜

There are moments that remind you exactly who you are.

This was one of them. 💜

Forty years ago, a handful of young men dared to dream that our communities deserved something different. Something bigger. Something rooted in Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service, and Cultural Awareness.

Nearly 27½ years ago, that dream became my home.

This weekend, I saw our Fraternity through every generation at once.

I saw our newest Brothers, full of hope, discovering what this Brotherhood can mean.

I saw the Brothers who built this organization—whose sacrifices made it possible for the rest of us to wear these letters with pride.

I saw passionate debate. Not division, but love. Because the people who fight the hardest for this Fraternity are often the ones who believe in it the most.

I watched us make history by choosing to become even more inclusive, proving that honoring our past and embracing our future are not opposing ideas—they are part of the same journey.

And somewhere between the business sessions, the grips, the hugs, the late-night conversations, the laughter, and the reunions with Brothers I hadn’t seen in years… I was reminded that this has never just been an organization.

It’s the people who believed in me before I believed in myself.

It’s lifelong friendships.

It’s mentors.

It’s family.

It’s home.

I don’t know what the next 40 years will look like. But I know this: if we continue to lead with courage, compassion, and love for one another, there is nothing Sigma Lambda Beta cannot become.

Thank you to every Brother—past, present, and future—for continuing to write this story together.

My heart is full.

Adelante, siempre. 💜

🎬 Before TikTok. Before Instagram. Before viral challenges.

In 2007, the same year that #hashtag and “tweet” entered our vocabulary, Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the first woman elected Speaker of the House, Rihanna’s Umbrella dominated the charts, and Apple introduced the iPhone, a group of Sigma Lambda Beta Brothers created a video that would become part of our Fraternity’s history.

What started as a creative project by the Brothers of Rho Alpha became something much bigger: a moment that showcased our Brotherhood to the world and connected generations of Betas through the power of storytelling.

In this video, hear from current members of the International Board as they reflect on the impact of that iconic video, what it meant to them as Brothers, and why content creation matters more than ever as we celebrate 40 years of Sigma Lambda Beta.

Today, every Brother carries a camera, an editing studio, and a platform in their pocket. The question is:

🎥 What story will YOU tell?

As part of the #SLB2027 Viral Video Challenge, we’re looking for the next generation of creators to honor our past and inspire our future.

📱 Post your original video on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube
🏷️ Use #SLB2027

🎥 The next iconic Sigma Lambda Beta video starts with YOU.

In 2007, the Brothers of the Rho Alpha Chapter created a video that became one of the most recognizable moments in our Fraternity’s history. Nearly 20 years later, we’re challenging Brothers across the nation to create the next viral Sigma Lambda Beta moment.

As we celebrate 40 years of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service, and Cultural Awareness, it’s time to show the world what Sigma Lambda Beta means to you.

📱 Create a video.
📍 Post it on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.
🏷️ Use #SLB2027
📅 Submit by July 8, 2026.

Whether it’s inspiring, funny, creative, educational, emotional, or completely unexpected, we want to see your vision.

The winning video will be recognized at BetaCon XL in Tampa and help shape how the next generation discovers our Brotherhood.

Honra el Pasado. Inspira el Futuro.
