Kutluğ Ataman’ın Küba’sı Art Basel Paris’in Kamusal Programı’nda

Kutluğ Ataman’ın 2004 tarihli video yerleştirmesi Küba, Art Basel Paris 2026’nın kamusal programı kapsamında Paris’te sergileniyor. Eser, Beaux-Arts de Paris bünyesindeki Chapelle des Petits-Augustins’te izleyiciyle buluşuyor. Sunum, Niru Ratnam Gallery tarafından gerçekleştiriliyor.

Kırk monitörden oluşan çalışma, İstanbul’un Küçükarmutlu mahallesinde yaşayan insanların portrelerini ve kişisel anlatılarını bir araya getiriyor. Ataman, mahalle sakinlerinin gündelik yaşamlarına, deneyimlerine ve umutlarına odaklanıyor.

2004’te Artangel tarafından sipariş edilen eser, daha önce Londra’da kullanılmayan bir postane binasında gösterilmişti. Paris’teki sunumunda ise Beaux-Arts de Paris’in tarihî mekânında sergileniyor.

Küba, Art Basel Paris’in fuar alanı dışındaki sergi ve yerleştirmeleri kapsayan Public Programı’nda yer alıyor.

“In Küba, Ataman has rejected the genre’s promise of transparency, and the accounts he records are marked by exaggeration, contradiction and, on occasion, performance for the camera. Running through the monologues are similar human concerns: marriage, children, parents, siblings, alliances and intergenerational feuds. Each story mixes triumph with despair, hope with fear, joy with pain.

For Ataman, this is precisely the point. “Only in actual speech,” he has argued, can we witness “this amazing rewriting of one’s history and reality.” Speech is understood here as self-authorship, and ethical listening becomes a matter of granting that authorship its integrity rather than adjudicating its accuracy. This distinguishes listening from mere reception. Küba asks the viewer to tolerate what cannot be resolved, whether contradiction, self-mythologising or gaps in the account, without forcing it into a verdict or a lesson.’

Conservation is a complex and often little known field of fine arts and museum practice. It combines art history, fine arts and natural sciences to ensure artworks are stabilised, repaired and preserved for the future.

It plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage in museum collections, but also has important implications and applications for all artworks, in private collections, homes and artist studios.

With a particular focus on 2-D artworks in Bermuda, join curators and consultants Daisy Gould and Nathan Ladd who will share their experience as curators at museums, including Tate, Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery, alongside New York based paintings conservator Mark Greenberg, to discuss and explore what fine art conservation is, why it is so important, and hear first hand more about the conservation work taking place on the Hamilton Princess art collection.

Daisy Gould is a Bermudian curator, researcher, and consultant currently based between London and Bermuda. Her PhD research engages Caribbean art and theory, focussing on contemporary Bermudian practices and the intersections of aesthetics, ecology, and decolonial thought. Informed by her academic research, Daisy’s professional practice spans collection management, curatorial programming, and ecological strategy for both private collections and public institutions.

She has curated and produced programmes with institutions such as Serpentine, Hayward Gallery, Tate, Turner Contemporary, and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, among others, and has contributed to several exhibition catalogues and journals as a writer and editor.

Daisy holds a BA in Art History, an MA in Contemporary Art Theory and is currently a PhD candidate in the History of Art at The Courtauld.

We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting Kutluğ Ataman’s Küba at Art Basel Paris as part of the fair’s Public Programme. It will be sited at the Chapelle des Petits-Augustins at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Küba (2004) is one of the defining moving image installations of the early twenty-first century. First presented by Artangel in London, the work has subsequently been shown at the Carnegie International, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and museums and institutions internationally.

Made in 2004, Küba brought together forty testimonies that are intimate, overlapping, bleak, humorous and defiant in turn; a babble of voices of the residents of an unauthorised, informal settlement in Istanbul. Together they ask how a community and a sense of belonging, might be constructed in the most precarious of circumstances.

Twenty-two years later, Küba returns to a world in which such questions around belonging and community is increasingly contested; who gets to determine that belonging, and whose claims to place can be erased.

Isaac Julien: Credo che l'arte possieda un inventario di codici espressivi capaci di operare una vera e propria archeologia della Storia. Come artisti, la nostra responsabilità è fornire strumenti per scardinare l'ascolto passivo e sollecitare un'esegesi alternativa dei fatti, che sappia in ultima istanza restituire il senso profondo del presente. Tornare a figure cardine del XX secolo – per esempio a Karl Marx o a Lina Bo Bardi - risponde alla necessità di reperire bussole teoriche per orientarsi nel caos del XXI secolo. In questo scenario, il cinema, inteso come arte totale che fagocita e sintetizza le altre discipline, si rivela lo strumento ideale, un dispositivo analitico formidabile per meditare sulle mutazioni culturali.
