☀️ Sunny morning going through our second flock of ewe lambs that have come down from Northumberland. They have been wormed and had a jab of Heptavac-P. They will join the other flock that came down two weeks ago on Tuesday!! Great job with the full team today! 🐑 🐶 👶🏼 🐾

Spoiler: there might be more stages between sheep and skein than you thought.

There are so many skilful steps that go into turning a sheep’s fleece into a wonderfully woolly product, each requiring care, knowledge and skill.

This is, of course, not the only route, but it is one journey. And it’s the one that I was lucky enough to see down in Bradford at the @britishwool depot and Haworth Scouring Co. as part of the @nationalsheep Next Generation Symposium earlier this Wool Month (ft. some clips from the Evanton depot and a cameo of @thesheepgamevlog)

Does this woolly journey surprise you? Would you like a closer look at any of the stages?

Many modern sheep breeds have been selectively bred to produce fleeces that no longer shed naturally. Without regular shearing, their coats can cause overheating, restricted movement and skin problems. Shearing is consequently an essential part of their care, although studies have recorded temporary stress during the process.

Some British farmers even spend more shearing their sheep than they receive for the wool. Research involving 25 UK sheep farmers also documented how they recognised individual animals through their appearance, behaviour and changes in health, sometimes developing close attachments over years of care.

PETA’s protests at New York and London Fashion Weeks have drawn attention to allegations of mistreatment in wool production. These cases deserve scrutiny, but should they determine how we view an entire industry?

@loropiana has invested in Mongolian cashmere production and grassland management, while @textileexchange’s Responsible Wool Standard establishes requirements for animal welfare, land management and traceability.

Animal fibres carry environmental costs, including methane emissions and processing chemicals. Responsible production requires addressing these alongside animal welfare, with the continued development of standards, training and farming practices.

Can we support the use of wool while demanding better conditions for the animals producing it?

Great to welcome the next generation of the sheep industry for the NSA Next Generation Wool Symposium

Bringing young people together to talk wool, share ideas and learn more about the industry is an important part of building a strong future for British wool.

Plenty of enthusiasm for wool in this group and plenty of good conversations too.

Fluffy levels: officially off the charts 🐑✨ Captured this lovely mum and her little one while exploring the Scottish Borders. She’s got that wise, calm look that only a mum has, and he’s just… well, he’s adorable and he knows it. The countryside really does have the sweetest moments 🐏🐑

A little look behind the scenes at the people, animals and preparation that goes into show day. ❤️

Unfortunately but inevitably evidence of Louping Ill Virus (LIV) has been found in the North Pennines - we believe for the very first time.
Our work with estates around tick surveillance and control involves blood sampling sheep and grouse for LIV antibody. Control is then based on tick burdens and presence of LIV.
Tick numbers are increasing across the UK and ticks are constantly being found in new areas and at higher altitudes.
Ticks are relatively new to the Pennines and it was only a matter of time before LIV was discovered.
This is of course bad news for sheep and grouse as LIV causes disease and mortality in both species.
We are currently driving 2 new projects around Ticks and tick-borne disease in sheep and grouse. More details to follow in time!

Our new menu showcases a seasonal duo of Herdwick Lamb Fillets as a great main course choice, with soft purple potatoes, fresh green beans and red chicory…the lamb fillets are slow cooked and melt in the mouth, perfectly complimented with the delicately smooth rosemary jus. Just in time for National Lamb Week with @nationalsheep #nationallambweek #lamb #finedining #foodie #farmtofork
