Perdita bees!
I was reading ‘101 Dalmations’ to Sapphire and realised that mumma Dalmation’s name was Perdita - which is a genus of native bees!

So much pollen on her booty she almost couldn’t fit in her nest!!! 🤯
This is Megachile oblonga, a common inhabitant of bee hotels . Like all Megachile, her scopae (pollen collecting hairs) are on the underside of her abdomen - and I’m betting that’s a load of Corymbia calophylla pollen, a critical resource for native bee biodiversity as a whole across southwest Western Australia.

Hylaeus albonitens bubbling!
This behaviour of serves to concentrate nectar. A study by Portman et al. Published in @apidologie found observations of this behavior to be taxonomically widespread, with observations of nectar concentrating behavior documented in 51 genera in six families. Nectar concentrating can have a variety of purposes, including “preparation for long-term storage in hives, modification before adding to larval provisions, removal of excess water for efficient storage in the crop, thermoregulation, and potentially for nest construction.”
As a Hylaeinae, this bee swallows both nectar & pollen, likely explaining the opaqueness of its bubbles

We’ve said it before, we will say it again…if you plant it, they will come. I’ll never forget the day we spotted something peculiar on a blade of switchgrass. Upon observation, we realized it was two native leaf cutter bees. Somehow these photos turned out and you can literally see their mandibles wrapped around the blade. Nature is amazing, but remember it’s only as incredible as your present mind will allow. Never forget to stick your head in the garden and really scan for new signs of life, it is ALWAYS worth it!

Tulipan Africano

the flowers of the African tulip tree are killing native bees and other insects, leaving their dead bodies in its blooms, and potentially poisoning their larvae and hives

Native to Africa, the Spathodea campanulata is pollinated by bats, birds and even lemurs, who are all safe to feast on the flowers’ sweet aromatic nectar which flowers most of the year in the tropics. The bees of Africa instinctively know to steer clear. The tree has evolved a mechanism to protect its precious pollen from being stolen from the early arriving bees. African Tulip trees have been planted around the globe in tropical climates as ornamental trees because of their strikingly beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, the bees of the Americas, Asia and South Pacific are not aware of the flowers’ deadly mucilage that it produces within its petals. The substance is like a jelly that prevents pollination by insects; bees in Africa know about this mucilage, but in other parts of the world they have no idea about it and end up either drowning or possibly carrying the poisonous substance back home with them, infecting larger populations.

The bees that are killed and at high risk are the most experienced foragers, the scout bees, that look for sources of food for the colony. Because they do not get back to the colony, no warning can be developed, so the loss of bees continues.

This loss of bees in turn has led to the loss of many species of native bees, which effects the ecosystems that depend on them.

Native bees provide a very important biological resource for pollination and subsequent fruit and seed formation in native plants. Many plant species are pollinated by native bees. Many of the plants of Santiago Tepetlapa have an important coevolution relationship with native bees.

Fortunately, we have no African Tulip trees planted at XOCOTE, and needless to say, we will not be planting any. But from various vista points we can see many African tulip trees down in the pueblo.
