Reminiscing on this magical pre-book launch event at @nameahawaii for my debut novel back in October 2019. 🥰

Seven years (and 7 novels) later, Iʻm packing for my Oʻahu trip and author event (SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2 p.m.) at @nativebookshi Hawaii. This time, Iʻll be celebrating my Hawaiian heritage with Hawaiian heritage with HAWAIʻI RAGE and KAUAʻI STORM. 🤙🏾🌺🥳

Niʻihau Shell Classes at Native Books at Arts and Letters in collaboration with Puʻuhonua Society are back in session! Kai Hyde will be teaching on the 3rd floor through the end of October on Fridays 10am-2pm and Sundays 11-2pm. All welcome, including drop-ins.

Come when you can and stay as long as you can, no need to come at the top of the hour but come early so you have time to get into the groove.

Making new...think pendants, earrings, or lei and Kai welcomes those with lei to restore or just come to talk story about anything Niʻihau shell related.

Friday 10am-2pm and Sundays 11-2pm through the end of October. - come anytime, Kai will be there! Address is 1164 Nuʻuanu Avenue.

NOTE: No class on September 20th.

If you want to learn more Chamoru language and words and share then with your children, students, family or friends, a set of Guam Bus Bingo cards is a great place to start.

Each bingo set features 75 vocabulary cards and 15 playing sheets. Some cards like the Kånta include bonus sentences. We try to incorporate imagery and references that are connected to Chamoru heritage.

You can buy a set on our website (www.theguambus.com) or at several local businesses on Guam such as The Local Shop, Faith Bookstore, New Memories, Rexall Drugs, Green Growth Guam, I Tenda from PIPIT, Bonita Baby, Puti’on Place and It Takes a Village. If you are in Hawai’i, you can get Guam Bus Bingo or other products at Native Books and Da Shop in Kaimuki.

My pilina to the Wauke tree, who’s biological genealogy connecting Hawaiʻi to East Asia reflects my own, sparked an interest in the importance of material and mentorship in the practices and protocols of other artists who work with plants. What have others learned from their lāʻau kūpuna?

Honored to share with community the lessons and insights that emerge from relating to plantcestors through artwork created by artists i’ve long admired and learned so much from!

As we face one climate disaster after another here in Hawai’i, i hope the stories shared in this show sprout a sense of hope, connection, and aloha ‘āina.

Join Kanaka Maoli writer Tori Eldridge for an afternoon of deep talk-story about her bestselling Ranger Makalani Pahukula Mysteries series of novels: Kauaʻi Storm and her latest, Hawaiʻi Rage.

Following the conversation, pupus and book signing, Tori will delve further into the nuts and bolts of her craft and technique. In this intimate workshop, sheʻll focus on the importance of a great opening—how to reveal heritage, history, character and culture, without slowing the pace. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to work closely with Tori as she shares her secrets for writing an emotive and revelatory opening that will propel your reader on a suspenseful, exciting, and emotional ride.

While participation is not required to attend, workshop attendees are encouraged to bring a short excerpt of their project in progress on which to experiment—the opening page or first chapter is recommended—along with whatever writing tools you usually use. This is sure to be a powerful and inspiring time with Tori!

Learn to weave microkorz (Chuuk style basket) with Niu (coconut palm fronds) with Philios Uruman! Philios is from Fananu Island in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. At the age of eleven, Philios left Chuuk with his family and settled in Waiʻanae, Oʻahu. He is a translator, policy advocate, and cultural consultant, and he has worked with a wide range of organizations in Hawaiʻi, the continental U.S, and the Pacific region. This class is free to attend, all materials provided.
