FELTspace provides artists opportunities to develop and present new experimental work that engages audiences in critical enquiry.

As a platform and testing ground run for and by artists, FELTspace is a vital part of the South Australian arts ecosystem, as well as the national network of artist-run initiatives (ARI). In fact, FELTspace is the longest running ARI in Adelaide.

In a rapidly changing world, this matters now more than ever, as online echo chambers diminish our capacity for critical conversation and contemporary art is increasingly focussed on the pretty and the palatable.

Support FELTspace, and support the next generation of experimental artists. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

At Town Hall Gallery, ‘Slow Read’ proposes a quieter rhythm, reimagining the printed page as material, object, archive and artwork. Reading becomes a tactile, embodied act; something performed not only with the eyes but through movement, memory and sustained attention.

Bringing together artist books, collage, painting, sculpture, moving image and installation, the exhibition unfolds through a series of thoughtful encounters. Words shift beyond language alone. Text is folded, obscured, stitched, translated, layered and reclaimed, becoming a material that carries histories, identities and emotions as much as meaning.

Zoë Croggon transforms magazine pages into sculptural collages where folded bodies and fragments of architecture collapse the boundaries between image and object.

Jacky Cheng’s woven paper installation ‘Thrums’ converts fragments of Chinese calendar pages into intricate threads of cultural memory, where language is sensed through repetition and materiality rather than fluency.

In Jayda Wilson’s ‘(un)silenced’, archival documents become acts of cultural reclamation, bringing suppressed Indigenous language into a moving meditation on memory, family and survival.

Martin King seals birds within opened books, obscuring the original text so that image replaces narrative, while Deborah Kelly liberates female figures cut from discarded art history books, allowing bodies once fixed within the Western canon to dance collectively in a joyful queer feminist reimagining.

In ‘Palomita/Soledad (Little Dove/Solitude)’, Nadia Hernández overlays poetry inherited from her grandfather with vivid drawings and handwritten forms, suggesting that language itself can become a site of migration, longing and belonging.

Across ‘Slow Read’, reading extends beyond decoding words on a page; it is an act of noticing, remembering, questioning and imagining. In slowing our pace, these works reveal that meaning rarely arrives all at once. Instead, like turning the pages of a book, it unfolds gradually through time, attention and the willingness to remain with uncertainty.

“Not at the table" is deliberately undomesticated. The works on placemats reject the idea of 'a seat at the table' and questions what it means to seek place on stolen land. The counter-invitations from indigenous, and racialised artists and writers unsettle white ethnocentric assumptions around belonging, access, and guest-host relations in the colony.

Another of the many projects cooked up by @alicemccool for us to serve up! The show is on at @suitesevena until August 14

These works were only possible through the generosity and collaboration of the featured writers. Alice and I extend our sincere thanks to them for trusting us to reproduce their words and bring them into relationships with each other. Swipe through for author and publication credits.

Huge thanks to the @fab_workshop team for assistance in making the custom framing and to Suite7a for all the install support!

'Slow Read' is on at Town Hall Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne until 25 July 2026.

Bringing together works by Jacky Cheng, Zoë Croggon, Julie Gough, Gracia & Louise, Nadia Hernández, Deborah Kelly, Martin King, David Noonan and Jayda Wilson, the exhibition turns away from the speed of digital consumption to focus on the tactile and imaginative possibilities of artist books, collage and printed matter.

Fragments of text and image are reassembled into layered visual narratives that reward careful attention, where sequencing, materiality and quiet acts of looking invite moments of reflection, curiosity and unexpected connection.
