Random MLB Spotlight #1051: René Rivera

I can't think of a better player to showcase first in this catcher-themed week. A 2nd round draft pick who made his MLB debut at age 21, René Rivera's perseverance rewarded him with 13 seasons for 10 different teams, serving usually as a backup or a personal catcher to pitchers like Andrew Cashner, Chris Archer, and Noah Syndergaard. "Moncho" had some pop, too, hitting 11 home runs in 2014 for the Padres and 10 in 2017 between the Mets and Cubs. He currently manages the High-A West Michigan Whitecaps.

Played for SEA (2004-06), MIN (2011), SD (2013-14), TB (2015), NYM (2016-17, 2019-20), CHC (2017), LAA (2018), ATL (2018), CLE (2021), WSN (2021)

Games Played: 542
Hits: 330
Home Runs: 43
Runs Batted In: 176
Stolen Bases: 1
AVG/OBP/SLG: .221/.273/.354
bWAR: 2.2

Take 2 is about our 1st baseman. All of them have potential, but 1 stands out to me the most.

Andrés Chaparro I think he will be Triple-A depth next season. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the season a lot of us had hoped for from him. He had a good 2nd half. You can say what you want about playing time, but his offensive numbers had an impact on his P.T. He needs to learn how to use the whole field as most of his hits were to the pull side, his whiff% is a 32.4% and he whiffs on off-speed pitches 47.1% of the time. He rarely uses the opposite field, leading to a K% of 23.2%. He did finish with a .263 average, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Abimelec Ortiz is a player with a lot of promise, like Chaparro, his issue is going to be discipline. His spray chart looks good and he’s trying to use the whole field. His walk percentage is 5.1% as he’s struck out 36 times in just 44 games. His upside is his launch angle sweet-spot percentage at 39.8% and his bat speed at 75.8 mph. His bat speed is the same as Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley. He just needs to work on discipline, and more opportunities will come for him.

Day 74: Anthony Rendon
•
I want to like this guy so badly. He was a fan favourite on the Nats for so many years with absolutely no drama whatsoever. He was a laid back guy and arguably the best player on that 2019 World Series squad. He even had a great shortened season in 2020, but I just cannot defend anything he has done since he hit that left handed homer off of Brett Phillips in 2021 ☹️
