POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🌍 Every year, millions of birds undertake extraordinary journeys between their breeding and non-breeding grounds, travelling along vast routes known as Global Flyways. 🌐🕊️

At Sandwich Bay, autumn migration is a remarkable spectacle, beginning as early as July and continuing through to November. Unlike the frantic rush of spring, autumn migration is often a slower, more leisurely movement. As days shorten and food becomes scarcer, birds begin their journey south. 🍂

But these journeys are not without risk. Migratory birds face multiple threats across the countries, habitats and ecosystems they depend on along the way.

Birds are powerful indicators of environmental health, and monitoring their movements and populations gives us valuable insight into the condition of our natural world. Yet the findings are alarming:

🚨 One in nine migratory bird species is threatened with extinction.

Protecting migratory birds means protecting the places they rely on throughout their entire journey — from breeding grounds to wintering areas and the vital stopover sites in between, special places like those found at Sandwich Bay and its recording area.

This autumn, take a moment to look to the skies, land and trees and remember: every bird has a journey, and every journey needs a safe place to stop, as these wonderful photos, captured at the Bay demonstrate 🐦🌿

Mexico. But perhaps not the Mexico you’re expecting.

In November 2027, Sendero Travel will be heading into the Yucatán Peninsula for 12 days of birds, wildlife, photography and culture.

From the flamingos and mangroves of Río Lagartos to endemic birds, Maya cities, cenotes and the wildlife of Sian Ka’an and Cozumel.

But for us, a great wildlife trip is about more than ticking off species.

It’s about slowing down. Spending time in the field. Working with knowledgeable local guides. And experiencing a place properly.

Some encounters stay with you long after the photographs have been taken.

Back in May, while photographing otters on the Isle of Mull, I had the pleasure of meeting two truly inspirational young adults and their wonderfully supportive parents.

What started as a shared love of watching and photographing these incredible animals turned into one of those lovely, unexpected connections that make wildlife photography about so much more than the photographs themselves.

It was a real pleasure meeting you all, and I’ve loved following your journey since.

Do give them a follow and support their Instagram journey — there’s some fantastic wildlife and photography to come.

Sometimes it’s the people you meet along the way that make a trip truly memorable. @nathanwoolloff.photography @tusoninthewild

Rising Above the Reeds

In the quiet wetlands of Mohali, beauty often hides in plain sight. Witnessing the Yellow Bittern break its silence and take to the sky is a reminder that grace isn't just about how we stand, but how we choose to rise.
Sometimes, we must leave the safety of the reeds to truly find our wings.

Spent a couple of days at the weirdly beautiful Dungeness - if you haven’t been it’s worth a visit. Spent most of my time photographing birds and boat wrecks but this little fox caught my eye at the entrance to the nuclear station. I’ve called him nuclear Freddie. We both watched each other for a few minutes before he disappeared into the grounds of the nuclear station.

The Dawn Chorus is at its height right now, and the song of a nightingale is something magical to listen out for. It’s a rare and beautiful sound & rarer still to see them, so congratulations @naturewithgreg for capturing this lovely shot of one in full voice. It’s our 🌟Star Feature🌟 today.
If you’re an early bird (or willing to set your alarm) don’t miss the chance to catch one of the best natural sound experiences in the next few weeks. Look out for special guided events near you e.g. there’s one next Friday 15 May at @holeparkgarden led by @wildstartsuk
