What if council members had to pass a quiz before they could vote?

If he had won, that's what he says he would have done. Spot check them. How much will this cost? What's being asked for? Where and when? The answers are in the document, but he says they never review it, they just vote, and the taxes go up.

Simple question, simple fix. Would you support it?

You don’t have to be an elected official to shape your city. You just have to be willing to show up!

Some of @hamtramck.city most meaningful work happens behind the scenes, through volunteers who give their time, knowledge, and energy to strengthen our city. They help support local businesses, preserve our history, enrich arts and culture, and serve residents in ways many of us never see. I met several of these dedicated individuals for the first time at this picnic, and it reminded me how easy it is to live in a city without realizing how many people are working to make it better. Beyond the food, laughter, and kids enjoying themselves, this gathering was about something deeper: making the people who serve our community feel seen, valued, and connected. Thank you to Mayor @adam.alharbi for creating this event and showing appreciation for these volunteers.

Want to make a difference in Hamtramck? Start by getting involved. The city has boards and commissions where residents can contribute their time, skills, and ideas:

📍 Arts and Culture Commission
🌿 Beautification Commission
🏛️ Board of Review
🏙️ Downtown Development Authority
📜 Historical Commission
🏠 Housing Commission
🤝 Human Relations Commission
💼 Income Tax Review Board
📚 Library Board
🏗️ Planning Commission
🌟 Youth Advisory Council
🏘️ Zoning Board of Appeals

Visit hamtramckcity.gov to learn more about what these boards and commissions do, find out who serves on them, and explore how to apply for a vacancy.

Learn about a commission, Attend a meeting, Apply to serve, Be part of Hamtramck’s future. 💜

You never learned how to do your taxes either.

Nobody taught us the proper way to vote in school. And he says it's the same as taxes: you didn't learn them, but you file every year because the IRS will come after you. Same with going to work. We do it because the bills show up.

So when it comes to voting, people will learn the right way once someone is coming after them. Why wait?

He refused to cheat to win.

A former Hamtramck mayoral candidate says he was told that to fix the problem, you have to be in office, and if you have to cheat the system to get there, that's what you do. His answer: "I'm not doing that."

He says there's a method to win, and he wasn't going to use it. Would you have said no?

I asked him one question: why did you run for mayor?

He said no for years. Then a friend, not even a close one, sent him a newspaper clip about corruption in Hamtramck at 2 AM. The message: if you don't run, they win. And you're the only honest person I know who can do it.

So he put his name in. The motorcycle he planned to build that summer got scrapped.

Would you have said yes?

Bengali people love giving advice. Business, parenting, life, everything. But this guest says you can't advise on something you've never done.

Built a business and it worked? Tell me what worked. Failed? Tell me what you learned. Never tried? That's an opinion, not advice.

Nobody calls it out because nobody wants to be the bad guy. Who have you been taking advice from?

Everyone says the older generation is stubborn. But let's be real, are we any different?

This one is about a friend with a hybrid and a conversation about brake pads. One side had a lot of hands-on experience. The other was an electrical engineer with better grades. Both walked away sure they were right. The point isn't who won. It's how fast we all build an opinion from something we saw or heard, and then defend it like it's fact.

That's not an uncle problem or a generation problem. That's a human problem. When's the last time you realized you were holding on to an assumption? Tell me below.

At 16, he built a garage from scratch.

He grew up poor, his dad worked in a factory, and when something needed fixing, you did it yourself.

His dad would come home around 11, eat, then take a car apart in that garage.

Around 2 AM, he'd get tired and stop, and his son had to figure out what his dad did before he could sleep, because otherwise, they couldn't get to work.

Is that where Bangladeshis get the hands-on thing from?

Tesla forgot about Michigan winters. At least that's what this engineer thinks.

He works for one of the Big Three. He says snow and slush slide right into a Tesla trunk when you open it, and the Cybertruck's main headlight sits in the bumper where snow can plug it up.

His point: the Big Three have 100 years of experience, so they don't miss details like this.

Does experience beat hype?

Bangladesh has a generation of young people with the stubbornness, ambition and dedication to build something meaningful. The question is whether we give them enough reason and opportunity to do it here.

As a Bangladeshi who grew up outside the country, I see the value of both perspectives. Bangladesh has incredible young people who are willing to work, take risks and chase their goals. We shouldn’t only showcase the Bangladeshis who leave and become successful abroad. We also need to showcase the young people who stay, build businesses, create opportunities and contribute right here at home.

If we want to see Bangladesh develop, we have to believe in the people who are going to build its future. Bangladesh’s youth don’t just need to be showcased. They need to be given the opportunity to become the people we showcase.
