🦋🚨 BIG NEWS FOR ERIC’S ID LAW! 🚨🦋

ERIC’S ID AMENDMENT ACT OF 2026 HAS PASSED OUT OF THE D.C. COUNCIL’S TRANSPORTATION & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE! 🎉🙌🏾

Yesterday, September 16, 2026, was a historic day for Eric’s ID Law! The amendment has now moved forward and will go to the full D.C. Council for a vote.

The District of Columbia is one step closer to having Eric’s ID Law — helping individuals with hidden and non-apparent disabilities communicate important information to first responders and others when they may need understanding, patience, and support.

🦋 Maryland started the journey.
🦋 Now Washington, D.C. is moving forward.
🦋 The butterfly is flying higher!

A HUGE thank-you to Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, Councilmember Zachary Parker, and all of the co-sponsors for supporting Eric’s ID Law and believing in the importance of this legislation.

This journey is bigger than one person. It is about safety, understanding, dignity, inclusion, and giving a voice to people whose disabilities may not be immediately visible.

I can’t believe my daughter, is now my sister. 🖤💛

For years, I joked that the only role I had held longer than leading the Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. was being Abriana’s mom. This Saturday marks the chapter’s 11th anniversary—and just days before that milestone, those two parts of my life came together as she became a member of the chapter I chartered and helped lead for 10 years.

Abriana, you did not join while I was president or simply follow a path I created for you. You waited until the decision was yours, entered in your own time and are now beginning your own journey of service and leadership.

This is legacy made visible: what began 11 years ago continuing through women working across generations to confront the generational challenges affecting Black women and girls. I was already incredibly humbled, honored and proud to call you my daughter. Being able to now call you my Coalition sister is a distinction all its own.

Thank you, Sunshine. You always reinforce my why. ❤️

Nobody said that the road would be easy!
But EVERY MOMENT up until this point has been worth it!!

I’ve been serving black women and girls for more than half of my life. This is not what I do. This is who I am!

I am so grateful to have been chosen to walk this path. So grateful that all that I have done in my life has brought me this far! I look forward to what’s ahead. Thank you to @ncbwdc for an amazing day! Today made my membership OFFICIAL. I am so honored to have been selected to be a part of this organization. Thank you to my Mom @shemsutenkamit for being present to bear witness to her hard work! And thank you to one of my most favorite women in the world, @mslauren_renee, my sponsor. Get women who will speak your name in the rooms you should be in!

Today’s ceremony and fellowship was beautiful.

Last Thursday, we had the privilege of celebrating our Founder and President, Dr. Tamara Wilds Lawson, as she received the 2026 #Shes100 Equity Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter.

The evening was a powerful reminder of what is possible when leaders, advocates, and organizations come together to advance equity and create opportunities for women and girls. We were honored to witness and celebrate the incredible impact of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women throughout the District of Columbia and the broader region.

Dr. Lawson was recognized for her leadership in philanthropy and her unwavering commitment to investing in women, families, and communities through the work of the Washington Area Women’s Foundation. Her vision continues to help create pathways to opportunity, economic mobility, and lasting change for generations to come.

Congratulations to Dr. Lawson and all of the remarkable honorees whose work is making a difference across our region. We are grateful to the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter, for this recognition and for their continued dedication to service, advocacy, and empowerment.
