🎶 Trinidad as we all know, chief role is calypso. Then featuring playing pan and dancing limbo. - Br. Valentino – Life is a Stage (1972)
.
🎭 Today the Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago (CITT) asks the question: “What if life really is a stage, and each of us has a role to play?”
.
In his thought-provoking calypso, Anthony Emrold Phillip, known to the world as Brother Valentino, the People’s Calypsonian, uses the metaphor of the stage to explore human experience. Inspired by the philosophical idea that the world is a stage, the song reminds us that life brings different roles, responsibilities, challenges and opportunities.
.
Like actors in a play, we all occupy different positions in society, as parents, children, leaders, workers and citizens. But the real question is not simply what role we play; it is how we play it.
.
Are we living with honesty and integrity?
Are we fulfilling our responsibilities?
Are our actions making a positive difference in the lives of others?
.
Through this powerful message, Brother Valentino demonstrates that calypso is more than entertainment. It is philosophy, social commentary and a lesson in living. His music encouraged us to look beyond appearances, reflect on our choices and consider the legacy we will leave behind.
.
🕊️ Brother Valentino’s life was a testament to the power of calypso as a voice for truth, justice, consciousness and the people. The Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago extends condolences to his family, the calypso fraternity and his fans. Another calypso icon is gone. 🤍

🎶 A calypso can hold the spirit of a place. 🇹🇹
.
In “Calypso Twist” (1963), Dr Slinger Francisco, The Mighty Sparrow, brings the Twist dance craze into a distinctly Trinidadian setting. Featured on his album The Slave, the song combines playful storytelling with pride in the home of calypso.
.
This Calypso History Month, we celebrate the music that keeps our cultural memories alive.

As we remember the life and contribution of the Mighty Sparrow, we remember not only the entertainer, Calypso Monarch and master of picong, but also a calypsonian who used his music to observe, question and comment on the political life of the nation.
.
From the earliest years of his career, Sparrow demonstrated an understanding of the power of kaiso as a form of public commentary. His songs could celebrate political leaders and policies, but they could also challenge those in power when he believed that promises were not being fulfilled or that decisions were affecting ordinary people.
.
One of the earliest examples was “No, Doctor, No,” released in 1957. The song emerged during the early years of the People's National Movement government and expressed frustration over rising costs, including increases in taxi fares and the price of milk. Through humour, repetition and satire, Sparrow transformed public dissatisfaction into a memorable calypso.
.
The significance of “No, Doctor, No” extends beyond its immediate political subject. It demonstrates the independence of the calypsonian's voice. Although Sparrow's early political calypsos were sometimes used to generate popular support for Eric Williams and the PNM, historians have also identified songs in which he criticised or rejected aspects of the government's policies. His political commentary could shift from support to criticism from one song or Carnival season to another.
.
This tension is an important part of understanding Sparrow's political calypso. He was not simply a mouthpiece for a political party or leader. His music provided a space in which political decisions, economic pressures and public concerns could be placed before the listening public and subjected to the wit, satire and scrutiny of kaiso.
.
“No, Doctor, No” was an early indication of what would become a defining characteristic of Sparrow's career: he sang about the times in which he lived, and he was not afraid to question those who held power.
.
In remembering the Mighty Sparrow, we therefore remember a calypsonian who did more than entertain. He observed. He questioned. He challenged.
