Pt 2
Turning up a switchback, a terrible buzzing sound came in like a swarm of angry bees over my head. It took a second to realize it was a drone. I met back up with ny crew and ate quick lunch on top. The drone pilot was also up there and seemed to completely ignore us. I signed log book behind sign with cartoonish head welded to it. Coming down from the summit, the dark clouds grew darker, temps plummeted, and winds pulled at loose clothing. We made quick progress on our decent. A poorly prepared family of three appeared and with fear in their voices, they asked how to get back to their car. I tried to help them get an idea by pulling up the maps and wished them good luck. Further down the woods road, we watered up at piped spring cow trough, even though there was a piped spring a few miles south. We were concerned that the spigot might be frozen, as it was getting really cold. From there, we sped on to camp, surrounded by twisted juniper. I thought we might nero into Grant's tomorrow, but Smoother made the point that we will be staying overnight in Pie Town, 2.5 days from Grant's. I sorta wanted to check out Grant's for more than a few hours. I think Smoother is trying to rush us a little bit so that we are able to meet Cindy at the Southern Terminus while she has time off work. I am not in a rush to crush our goal of sub 120 days. I am once again nervous about post trail, and hesitant to finish. Still, I am having a good time. The night sky's stars twinkle above me in blurry glory, as I have my glasses off while typing.

Sept 10 pt. 1
25.2 miles
Woke and walked thru town to the Post Office. Crossing over the San Juan River on Hot Springs Blvd, the distinct odor of sulfer entered my nostrils. Several spas dotted the street, but for those who wanted to feel the healing waters for free, a broken PVC pipe spilled steaming water into a man-made pool on the river bank.
I was the first person into the PO, but local folks formed a line in front of me while I strolled around the PO boxes, killing time. Ugh. Then, the clerk had some difficulty finding package, telling me to return after noon. I said that I was leaving town at 9AM, and he made an extra effort in between customers to look for it. While waiting, I talked to a few people in line. I overheard one gentleman sending a resupply box to Lake Tahoe, and discovered that he was going to do the Tahoe Rim Trail. I gave him some info on the trail and a boat load of effusive encouragement. Another customer ran me through the standard questions, and was very impressed. Eventually, the clerk found my package, I slipped my feet into my new shoes, launched my old pair into the dumpster behing the PO and walked to a gear store for some new socks. While perusing the selection,Smoother called to let me know that Jim was coming much earlier than we had expected. I rushed to pay, as I still hadn't bought any food for the next leg. A woman in her car stopped me on the way to a nearby convenience store. She said that she was at the post office, overheard my story, and was inspired to give money to help with my journey. I refused the money, saying that the intention of her offered gift that was the real value. She wished many blessings upon me as I ran across the street for a rapid resupply. Back to the motel, we packed up and met Jim and AQUA for the ride back to Wolf Creek Pass. The trail wound behind the Wolf Creek ski area, where a large group of senior hikers in day-glo orange vests were trudging up. They politely moved aside, and as I passed one gentleman, he asked where I was from. "New Jersey", I replied. "You're not from Rahway, are ya?" My eyes widenened. "Nope, Linden, right next door!". 1. The mystery. Why would anyone core and blast a sandstone block out in the middle of no where. 2. Clue No. 1: a small building. 3. Clue No. 2: a large building made of sandstone blocks. But why? 4. Clue No. 3: what looks like a tailings pile. For what? 5. The answer: coal. The mine provided coal for steam-engine trains until 1950 when the diesel-electrics came around.

The necks of the hoodoos are unconsolidated volcanic ash with embedded tuff. The cap rocks are coarse-grained sandstone. The last image is of lingoid ripple marks
