In 2025, a total of 10,629 children were reported missing to police across New York State – 94% were reported as runaways. For over 140 years, FCA has operated Nassau Haven, Nassau County’s only 24/7 emergency shelter for runaway and homeless youth.

FCA recently collaborated with our fellow providers on the Long Island Missing Child Rescue Operation. Over 100 professionals and 40 organizations joined forces on the three-day operation to locate 34 children and teens reported missing and connect them with relevant services. In addition to our emergency shelter, FCA offers case management, mental health resources, educational and vocational assistance, and clinical interventions designed to support runaway youth as they re-build their lives.

We are proud to stand together with our fellow service providers to bring children to safety. SCATI extends our deepest appreciation to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Missing Persons Clearinghouse, the National Child Protection Task Force, and the New York State Police for the leadership, planning, and coordination behind the Long Island Missing Child Rescue Operation.

Over the course of three days, more than 100 professionals representing nearly 40 agencies and organizations worked together to locate 34 missing children and teens and connect them with care, services, and continued support. This operation was not only about finding young people—it was about understanding what placed them at risk and building a response around safety, stability, and their individual needs.

We are especially proud of the SCATI members and partners who participated in the Suffolk County response, including the Suffolk County Police Department Human Trafficking Investigations Unit, Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Nassau & Suffolk EAC Network/Safe Harbour, and the many law-enforcement, child-welfare, advocacy, and service professionals who brought their expertise to this effort.

To our SCATI members: thank you for your dedication. The work you do often happens quietly—reviewing cases, following leads, supporting young people, coordinating services, advocating, and staying at the table long after an operation ends. This is why multidisciplinary partnerships matter.

Finding a child is only the beginning.
Listening. Supporting. Stabilizing. Preventing future harm. That is the work that follows.

#NYSOCFS was honored to co-lead the Long Island Missing Child Rescue Operation alongside @nysdcjs and the National Child Protection Task Force (@ncptf). With support from @nyspolice and 100+ professionals, the operation located 34 missing children and teens and connected them with services.

Apparently I’m only good at life updates once my camera roll has a full year+ of evidence. (And a year seems to go by very quickly at this pace.)

There’s something really ✨real✨ about the bonds built when you spend enough time living out of suitcases alongside folks—sorting ride shares and flight delays after long, emotionally intense days, navigating high-stakes situations on too much caffeine, airport food, and very little sleep, laughing when you desperately need to… and holding space when tears happen instead.

The brilliant humans I get to deploy and build alongside in this phase of life are some of the best I’ve ever known. And it’s not lost on me how incredibly rare it is to not only love the work I do, but to also be surrounded by such a high level of human excellence while I do it.

When work happens everywhere, the constant becomes the people you’re doing it with. I’m infinitely lucky—and just as grateful—to share this weird, wonderful life with these insanely good humans. ❤️

Why do people choose to work in this field? Why do they chose to work in a sector that is so difficult?

Because some children grow up believing no one is coming.

They’ve been ignored. Hurt. Manipulated. Abandoned. They’ve been told they don’t matter, whether through words or through the actions of the people who were supposed to protect them.

Melissa sees something different.

She sees a child who deserves to be heard.

A child worth fighting for. A child whose story isn’t over.

She knows that sometimes the most powerful thing you can give a child isn’t an answer. It’s your presence. Your patience. Your belief that they are worthy of a future they may not be able to see for themselves yet.

That’s her why.

To stand beside children until they begin to believe what she’s believed about them all along:

You matter. You are not alone. And what happened to you does not get to decide who you become.

Every missing child has a name, a face, and a story.

They are more than a case number. More than a report. They are a child who deserves to be found.

This video captures what happens when people refuse to stop looking.

For three days, law enforcement, child protection professionals, victim advocates, analysts, technology partners, and nonprofit organizations worked side by side across Southwest Florida with one objective: find vulnerable children and bring them to safety.

What makes these operations extraordinary is not any one agency, organization, or individual.

It’s the collaboration.

It is detectives sharing intelligence in real time.
It is analysts following leads.
It is advocates preparing to support a child the moment they are found.
It is technology accelerating investigations.
It is partners choosing mission over ego and working toward a common goal.

This operation resulted in the recovery of 21 missing and endangered children, including children who were at risk for trafficking and exploitation.

Not every missing child is kidnapped. Many are running from abuse. Neglect. Violence. Exploitation. Some don’t believe anyone is looking for them.

We want every child to know this: You matter. You are not forgotten. And there are people who will never stop searching for you.

At Operation Light Shine, we are proud to support this work through our SWFL INTERCEPT Task Force, helping provide the technology, resources, and personnel that empower investigators to do what they do best: protect children and pursue those who exploit them.

We are deeply grateful to the @ncptf, whose leadership, expertise, and commitment helped make this operation possible, and to the more than 145 professionals who showed up ready to work, collaborate, and fight for children they had never met.

Because when organizations come together, walls come down.

When resources are shared, cases move faster.
When communities unite, children come home.
We are grateful for the 21 children who were found.

But we never forget the reason this work exists.

Somewhere tonight, another child is missing.

And we’ll be ready to look.

This week, Operation Light Shine was honored to stand alongside the National Child Protection Task Force, law enforcement agencies, child protection professionals, advocacy organizations, and technology partners during a coordinated Missing Child Rescue Operation across Southwest Florida.

Working together across Collier, Lee, and Hendry counties, this multi-agency effort resulted in the recovery of 21 missing and endangered children, many of whom were at increased risk for trafficking, exploitation, and further harm. For us, this work is about more than statistics.

Throughout the operation, a bell rang each time a missing child was located or identified. With every ring came a moment of hope, a reminder of why this work matters. By the end of the operation, the bell had rung 21 times.

Twenty-one children! Twenty-one opportunities for safety, support, and a brighter future.

As a partner in this operation through our INTERCEPT Task Force, we witnessed firsthand what can happen when agencies, nonprofits, advocates, and technology partners come together with a shared mission: finding vulnerable children and connecting them to the resources they need. The work doesn’t end when a child is located. Recovery is only the beginning.

Thank you to the National Child Protection Task Force and the more than 145 professionals who dedicated their time, expertise, and resources to this operation. The recovery of 21 children is proof that collaboration is more than a buzzword. It is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect vulnerable children, support families, and create safer communities.
