Did you know there is a nuclear reactor on NC State’s Campus?

Pictured is the Burlington Nuclear Reactor under construction, circa 1952. Once completed, it became the first non-government, university-operated, nuclear reactor in the world.

Our recent risk management tour at North Carolina State University’s PULSTAR reactor gave us the opportunity to see how radiation levels are monitored in real time to protect students, researchers, and the surrounding community. With layers of engineering, protocol, and precision in place, it’s one of the most controlled environments you can imagine.

What’s even more impressive is how this same science is making a difference every day through cancer treatment and advancements in veterinary medicine. We left with a whole new appreciation for nuclear science and the professionals dedicated to keeping it powerful, safe, and insured!

Meet Dr. Jason Hou, an @ncstate Fulbright Scholar working to advance nuclear energy solutions for a rapidly changing world.

Through his Fulbright experience in Italy, Hou collaborated with international researchers to explore how advanced reactors can be deployed safely, efficiently and at scale to address growing energy demands and climate challenges.

🌍 Global learning expands how we solve global problems.

Join us for a panel discussion with professors from the Department of Political Science as they discuss recent events in the Middle East. They will consider Iranian domestic politics, the prospects for diplomacy, the Trump administration's justifications for the conflict, the history of Iran's nuclear activities, and the geopolitics of a broader conflict. A Q & A will follow.

Get to know our PULSTAR reactor.
💧 Twenty gallons of water pass through it every minute. That’s about one gallon every three seconds.
2️⃣ Only two PULSTAR reactors were ever built. Only one isstill in operation. All of the fuel for the reactor was created in the 1960s, so a new fuel source will be needed in the coming years.
🩻 The reactor is a premiere beam port facility. With these, scientists can measure things that are smaller than can be measured by x-ray.
💙 It glows blue because the charged beta particles travel faster than the speed of light.
