A look back at our first Squamish Youth Art Camp, held in partnership with the Aboriginal Gathering Place & Emily Carr University.

Throughout the week, youth explored different creative practices with a range of workshop instructors. Whess Harman led a collage workshop, where students created their own characters with illustrations by cutting & combining different styles. Plus, students created 10" drums with instructors Sydney Pascal & Kajola Morewood.

This zine harvest they will be harvesting the toils of their summer crash-out to create a solo art exhibition focused on manifesting the Indigenous punk venue that they’d never charge rent for in their mind onto paper. Orchid Contemporary is excited to present “The Name Of”, a group exhibition curated by Maddie Alexander, opening Saturday September 12th, 6-8pm. The exhibition will run until October 10th.

As a culmination of the inaugural year of “The Name Of” residency, a space for Trans and Two-Spirit artists, we present to you our exhibition, hosted by Orchid Contemporary. This exhibition is curated by the residency founder, Maddie Alexander, and presents the work of 16 Trans and Two-Spirit Artists who participated in the 2026 year of the residency. This exhibition holds the collaborations and creations of these artists, after a week shared together in March of 2026 at Gibraltar Center for the Arts. Through this collaboration with Orchid Contemporary, a trans-led gallery, we present the power of giving space to trans artists to create collectively, share their own self determined spaces, and highlight the ways in which trans folks create and permeate visual culture.

Featuring the work of: Jadi Darawi, Abi Hodson, Michael David Battle, Azka, Cameron DePutter, Amir Patros, Nahrain Yousefian, Robin Alex McDonald, Shannon Sandwell, Eli Nolet, Aras Pars Aykus, Theo Donovan, Lorelei d’Andriole, riley yaxley, Whess Harman, and Aida Lodge.

Please join us in celebrating Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun and Whess Harman upon the conclusion of their residencies with Libby Leshgold Gallery.

These production residencies marks the beginning of an international partnership supporting the production of new work by three artists from the Pacific Northwest for a future presentation in 2027.

✨️ A sappy post on the occasion of my very first SappyFest: I came, I saw, I danced, I sang and had a general blast in Sackville, New Brunswick!

I first heard of SappyFest about 10 years ago thanks to Ottawa pal Eric Scharf, and as a music lover and big arts and culture supporter, I knew I had to get there. It's been on my bucket list since. I was hoping to go in 2022 and then in 2023, but the stars didn't align at the time, so I made sure they did this year. I mean, the festival is just an hour and thirty minutes drive from my place, door-to-door, how could I not?

SappyFest is welcoming, SappyFest is fun, SappyFest is community-built and oriented, SappyFest is caring, SappyFest is family-friendly, SappyFest is inclusive, SappyFest is a safe place, SappyFest is creative, and whimsical and weird and DIY and basically what festival dreams are made of. It's the best kind of festival and this trial run will surely become an annual tradition for yours truly. It's like Pique, meets Arboretum, meets the FOÉ (Festival de l'Outaouais émergent) for my Ottawa-Gatineau peeps.
