5 years ago today, George Clanton and Negative Gemini released “Fucking Up My Life”.

Before the final version of the collaboration took shape, George’s archive already included a first demo dated January 2020. Part of the song also seems to have grown out of another abandoned track called “It’s Me Again”. In notes for that demo, he explained that he was dropping it because it didn’t feel like the kind of “BANGER” he wanted for his comeback, but that some of its ideas had already found their way into a new track called “im fucking up my life”.

George later described “Fucking Up My Life” as a love letter to performing live, despite touring repeatedly costing him money, leaving him sleeping on floors and, at one point, with a seriously broken ankle.

That injury happened during a Denver show in 2019. George jumped from the stage, landed badly, felt something pop and still finished the song. He later continued the tour in a wheelchair. A couple of years later, he turned that whole love-hate relationship with the road into a track deliberately made to go off live: fast, loud and built for a mosh pit.

The video was directed by Cory Nixon, who had previously worked with George on “Dumb”. They shot it only a couple of weeks before his 2021 tour, and the edit was finished just as George was flying to New York. The single dropped on October 7. The tour started the next day.

The collaboration also captures one of Lindsey French’s final releases under the Negative Gemini name. Just a few weeks later, she became Neggy Gemmy, a nickname originally given to her by TV Girl’s Brad Petering. And she wasn’t just a guest vocalist here. When the song eventually appeared as “F.U.M.L.” on Ooh Rap I Ya in 2023, George’s official album credits listed it as a co-write between the two. That’s hardly surprising, considering George and Lindsey also run 100% Electronica together.

4 years ago this week, Neggy Gemmy released “Gemmy Juice,” featuring Sarah Bonito, an 81-second sugar rush that turns Lindsey French into her own fake Y2K soft drink.

Back in 2019, when Neggy Gemmy was still performing as Negative Gemini, Lindsey toured North America with Kero Kero Bonito. A few years later, Sarah popped up on “Gemmy Juice.” Lindsey wrote and produced the track herself.

In the amazing video, the pink glitter sludge Neggy Gemmy dunks her entire head into was actually a kiddie pool filled with cornstarch, red food coloring and glitter. Right before doing the shot, Lindsey started wondering what would happen if the mixture got inside her ears. She did it anyway. She also handled the production design and costumes herself, while George Clanton helped create the special effects. The clip feels like a commercial for some forbidden drink you would have seen on Nickelodeon at 2am in 2001.

The Y2K energy is amazing too. Around this period, Lindsey had become obsessed with the bright, ridiculous optimism of records like Daft Punk’s Discovery, Basement Jaxx and Kylie Minogue’s Fever. After a difficult period when she felt like she had almost forgotten how to make music, that world helped her find the fun in it again.

“Gemmy Juice” might only last 81 seconds, but it actually packs in a lot: bubblegum, club music, glitter, fake advertising, digital avatars and Sarah Bonito casually appearing for one of the catchiest hooks on the record.

"For me, my favorite album is my most recent album, She Comes From Nowhere, and I hope that I always feel that way. I hope that I always feel like whatever I’ve done most recently is my favorite because, to me, it shows that I’ve had growth, and I want to be proud of my progression." - @neggygemmy via instagram live 9•25•2026
