$‘Material Matters: Textile Artist Group Exhibition’, curated by Nicole Kemp at Artemisia Gallery, asks what happens when materials traditionally dismissed as domestic or decorative are given the space and attention of contemporary art. The slowness and repetition of hand-making become particularly significant, turning acts of stitching, knotting, weaving and sewing into gestures of patience, care and persistence. The exhibition foregrounds the labour embedded within textiles, revealing how humble materials can carry memory, identity and personal histories. Nicole Kemp’s brightly coloured work, bearing the phrase “this work will be undervalued as it uses an artform associated with women,” becomes deliberately jarring, exposing the very hierarchies the exhibition questions. In Tamara Russell’s ‘Textile Kintsugi’ series, fractured ceramics are stitched back together with reclaimed kimono silk and thread. The repair becomes more than restoration; fabric enters the cracks as an act of tenderness, suggesting that damage can be acknowledged rather than concealed. Sophia Slaney-Marsch’s ‘Saliva on Thread’ makes the body itself part of the material. Spit becomes both tool and trace — an intimate, almost visceral gesture that leaves something of the artist physically embedded within the work. Louise Saxton’s ‘Rumi’s Garden’ is softer and ornamental, with mirrored birds feeding among delicate floral forms. At its centre, the symmetrical plant-like shape carries an almost bodily quality, resembling a womb or reproductive form. Marie Bogoyevitch’s ‘Would You Pass This Test?’ uses the intimacy of hand embroidery to confront a much harsher history. A seemingly innocuous tea towel becomes a site of racist exclusion, referencing the Dictation Test used under the White Australia Policy. The painstaking act of stitching forces us to spend time with words originally designed to exclude. ‘Material Matters’ refuses to separate material from meaning. Thread, fabric, ceramic, spit and stitch are not simply vehicles for an idea — they are where the idea lives. @artemisia.galleryspace @nekemp #luminosa #luminosaartsscene #artemisiagallery #textiles #artexhibition$

‘Mignon’ is a recent textile piece dedicated to the memory of my Aunt.
What was originally a wet felted sample made during a workshop for some super keen felters became something more using needle felting which enabled me to add smaller circles directly onto this gifted hand woven mat.

This piece plus many more amazing pieces of textile art can be seen @artemisia.galleryspace , curated by @nekemp from now until Sunday 9th August…..
