This Navratri, remember that the Divine Mother takes many forms. Sometimes she nurtures, sometimes she protects, and sometimes she destroys what must come to an end.

The story of Kali reminds us that peace isn’t always silence, and anger isn’t always destruction. Sometimes, it is the clarity to recognise what must change and the courage to act.

May we find the wisdom to know when to surrender, when to stand firm, and when to become the force that breaks an old pattern.

Our mothers sometimes, very unconsciously, think of us as their therapists, a place to dump all their difficult emotions, or as a mediator against other members of the family. Forcing you to grow up “too fast”, becoming the responsible one, the one who fixes everything, in all difficult situations.

The innocence, the joy of childhood lost in the process.

In adult relationships, this shows up as you being a fixer, a mother to even your partners, because you unconsciously end up attracting partners that are emotionally immature or dependent on you.

To break away from this cycle, we work on healing the mother wound. A mother wound is an emotional or psychological pain that forms in the gap between the care a child needed and the care they actually received.

Nine days may not change everything. But they can change something.

And sometimes, that’s enough to begin. ❤️

Sri Radha is everywhere in Braj, and yet the Bhagavata Purana never names her directly.

She survives through paintings, songs, temples, village traditions and the living geography of Braj itself. Over centuries, different lineages remembered her differently, but again and again she comes to represent something much larger than romantic love. She becomes the language of devotion, longing and complete surrender.

And perhaps that is why the Raas Leela is so often misunderstood when we read it only as a love story.

The gopis leave everything when they hear Krishna’s flute. They search for him when he disappears. They move through longing, separation, pride, surrender and finally union. The story slowly takes love away from possession and towards something far more selfless. A love that does not ask, “What do I receive?” but simply, “How completely can I give myself?”

In later Vaishnava traditions, Radha becomes Krishna’s hlādinī śakti, the very power of love and bliss. Not simply the one who loves Krishna, but the love through which Krishna is loved.

And then there is perhaps the most beautiful devotional interpretation of all.

Dhārā is a stream, a flow. Love moves from the Divine towards creation. But when that same love turns back towards its source, dhārā becomes Rādhā.

Maybe this is what generations of Braj were really preserving through her story.

Not only the memory of a beloved, but the possibility of a love so selfless that the lover slowly disappears into devotion, and what remains is only love, bliss, and the longing to return to where it all began.
