9 + 0 = 9
8 + 1 = 9
7 + 2 = 9
6 + 3 = 9
3 × 3 = 9
18 ÷ 2 = 9
12 − 3 = 9
27 ÷ 3 = 9

Eight different ways. One correct answer.

Now apply that same concept to leadership.

One of the biggest mistakes a leader can make is believing that their way is the only right way. Just because you’ve done something a certain way for 20 years doesn’t mean someone else can’t accomplish the same objective using a different approach.

Experience is valuable. Tradition has its place. Standards are necessary. But none of those should prevent us from listening, learning, and recognizing that there may be another way to get the job done.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭.

If someone can accomplish the same objective safely, effectively, and within established standards, why should it matter if their approach looks different from yours?

As leaders, we should be developing independent thinkers, not creating carbon copies of ourselves. We should encourage questions, welcome ideas, and give people the opportunity to solve problems without constantly looking over their shoulders.

That doesn’t mean lowering expectations or compromising safety. It means understanding the difference between maintaining a standard and controlling every step of the process.

𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭” 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭.”

Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is step aside, watch someone else work, and realize there’s something new to learn.

Different methods. Same positive outcome.

That’s not a failure of leadership. That’s what good leadership should produce.

What does it take to build, train, and maintain a highly capable special rescue team?

In this episode of The Rescue Lab, we head to Switzerland for a conversation with Jens and Noam from @schutzrettungbe to explore how Swiss rescue professionals prepare for complex technical rescue incidents.

We take a closer look at their approach to building specialized rescue capability, developing team competency, and preparing rescuers to operate in challenging environments. From training philosophies and operational readiness to the unique demands of technical rescue in Switzerland, Jens and Noam offer an inside look at how their teams approach the mission.

The conversation goes beyond equipment and technical skills to examine the people, training, and organizational commitment required to build a rescue team that can perform when it matters most.

It's an opportunity to compare approaches across borders, learn from the Swiss rescue system, and explore lessons that technical rescue teams around the world can apply to their own programs.

Different countries. Different systems. Shared mission.

Winning an election doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Being well liked, sharing a few beers, and getting along with everyone are great qualities, but they won’t make the tough decisions for you when things go sideways. If you’re going to accept the responsibility of leading firefighters, you owe it to them to keep improving. Read a book, attend a class, listen to a podcast, study tactics, or learn from those around you. Whatever it is, never stop learning. Nobody expects you to know everything, but your firefighters deserve someone who’s willing to put in the work. Be a good person, be approachable, and enjoy the brotherhood, but remember, popularity might win you an election, preparation earns you the right to lead.

Four stations. Countless reps. One solid weekend.

From extrication and ropes to rakers, shoring, and water rescue logistics, Rescue Weekend was all about getting hands-on, sharpening skills, and learning from some of the best.

Huge shoutout to the instructors who brought the knowledge, the sponsors who helped make it happen, and everyone who showed up ready to put in the work.

Good training, great people, and a whole lot of teamwork. That’s what it’s all about.

The firefighter mindset goes beyond the fireground. It’s about thinking ahead, staying composed under pressure, looking out for your crew, and constantly pushing yourself to improve. These traits aren’t developed overnight. They’re built through training, experience, discipline, and dedication. Nobody is perfect, but there’s always room to be better than you were yesterday.

The standard you set for yourself matters.

Big shoutout to the New England Rescue Collaborative for putting our DRTs to work during the USS Salem/NERC Rescue Challenge! 🚨🌊

We were proud to provide the team with a couple of complimentary samples and loved hearing their positive feedback after using them in their rescue gear and training.

The DRT is built to be ready when you need it—a compact, affordable 5-in-1 tool for repositioning, lifting support, protecting stretchers and gurneys, and keeping rescue equipment cleaner.

Thank you to the New England Rescue Collaborative for giving Carry Less Supply and the DRT a chance to be part of your team. We appreciate the support!
