It is a time to discover books that help children see themselves, their communities and the world around them.

We’re celebrating the diversity of Black stories this October, while also reminding ourselves that representation matters beyond October.

The more diverse our bookshelves, the more perspectives, experiences and stories we make room for.

Jeanetta Gonzales (@nettdesigns) - As a designer, illustrator, and artist coach, Jeanetta’s work seamlessly combines her design background with her fine art training, blending traditional and digital techniques. Creating in both paint and digital illustration, her signature art radiates energy and a sense of connection. She’s not shy when it comes to pattern and color mixing, often showcasing maximalism in her work as seen in her recent series of four "Free Pass" coupon books offering permission slips to rest, create and thrive without guilt.

Dr. Charmain Jackman (@innospych) - Dr. Jackman’s 20 years of experience as a psychologist fuels her company InnoPsych, both a network for people of color to find therapists and a place of support for psychologists of color. A decorated speaker and activist, Dr. Jackman’s community involvement sheds light on inequalities while offering solutions in the mental health space. Her book, “The Black Therapist’s Guide to Private Practice and Entrepreneurship’ offers a detailed blueprint for thriving as an underrepresented mental healthcare provider.

Leslie Forde (@moms_hierarchy_of_needs) - For Leslie, the creation of her business Mom’s Hierarchy of Needs, grew out of her own challenges as a mom struggling with workplace and home life demands. Backed by research from thousands of caregivers, Leslie’s book “Repair with Self Care” offers tactical guidance on prioritizing one’s needs while awaiting systemic reform. Leslie consults with companies on how to better support their caregivers with specific workplace policies and is an avid public speaker at many institutions and companies across the country. She also cultivates a membership-based netw

Most of the art I made during the Summer Creative Retreat 🌼 For those who don't know it's 6 days full of free online art classes.

My two fave things that happened:

1. I FINALLY unsealed and used the gouache set I bought in 2020. I was scared of using it and making the colours dry, and felt guilty about it. I somehow found the courage ㅠㅠ'

2. Embroidery on watercolour paintings?? I can't believe I've never thought of that. I feel like I suddenly unlocked a new skill.

Happy American Flowers Week 🇺🇸💐✨ — Here’s to showcasing domestically grown flowers during our week-long celebration while raising consumer awareness and uniting America’s flower farmers with the U.S. floral industry!

But first, what is American Flowers Week?

The goal of American Flowers Week is to engage the public, policymakers and the media in a conversation about the origins of their flowers. As an advocacy effort, the campaign is timed to coincide with America’s Independence Day on July 4th, providing florists, retailers, wholesalers and flower farmers a patriotic opportunity to promote American grown flowers.

Now the fun stuff… 🎉

We’re so proud of the collaborations we’ve created between Slow Flowers Society and our guest artists over the years. Since 2015, we’ve commissioned original illustrations, prints, drawings, photography, and floral art from many gifted friends of Slow Flowers, including our members.
