How often do we react or judge before we spend the time to really look and listen these days?
A car that cuts you up racing to a hospital, a comment, video or photo edited to look out of context and perhaps worse of all judgement on what we perceive as true about someone we have never met or a story we know nothing about.

Am I old fashioned to want first hand knowledge before I decide?

Perhaps we all need to look at things differently , look for the good and consider the positives before we judge and maybe we could get on a little better with a little more patience and understanding.

Today I finished writing the report from a student survey I conducted.

As a former SEND student myself, it was incredibly difficult reading experiences that I related to on such a personal level. At the same time, being able to turn those experiences into something meaningful — and hopefully use it to push for the change so many of us needed — felt genuinely empowering.

The findings will begin to be published over the next week or so.

Çocuğunuzun davranışlarının bir anda sizi şaşırtacak kadar değiştiğini hiç fark ettiniz mi?

🌿 Ortada belirgin bir sorun yoktu
🌿 Durum aslında zor görünmüyordu
🌿 Ama bir anda gelen tepki beklediğinizden çok daha büyük oldu

Bu anlarda bazen bunu “yaramazlık” gibi yorumlayabiliriz ama çoğu zaman yüzeyin altında başka bir şey olur.

Birçok annenin fark etmediği önemli bir nokta var:

Çocuğun sinir sistemi çok kolay şekilde aşırı yüklenebilir. Gün içindeki kalabalık ortamlar, gürültü, sosyal beklentiler ve sürekli değişen durumlar zamanla bir baskı oluşturur. Bu baskı yönetilemeyecek noktaya geldiğinde, davranış aslında sinir sisteminin bunu dışa vurma şekli haline gelir.

Bazen “karşı gelme” gibi görünen şey aslında bir bunalmadır.
Bazen “reddetme” gibi görünen şey, çocuğun fazla yükle baş etmeye çalışmasıdır.

Bunu anlamak, o anlarda vereceğiniz tepkiyi tamamen değiştirebilir. Yardımcı olabilecek küçük bir adım, çocuğun sinir sisteminin sakinleşmesi için alan tanımaktır.

Örneğin:

⭕Yoğun duygusal anlarda beklentileri azaltmak
⭕Önce sakin bir bağ kurmak
⭕Sorunu çözmeye çalışmadan önce regülasyon için zaman tanımak, çoğu zaman bir çocuk, ne olduğunu anlatabilmeden önce sakinleşmeye ihtiyaç duyar.

What if the very thing a child is told is their “struggle”… is actually their greatest strength?

Yesterday at the Made By Dyslexia premiere, one message stood above everything else ...

Dyslexic thinking is not something to overcome.
It is something to RECOGNISE.

Listening to speakers from GCHQ, inventors, scientists, and young people with dyslexia was such a powerful reminder that different thinking is often extraordinary.

Too often, schools focus on what a child finds difficult.

But what if we started with what they are brilliant at?

Creativity.
Problem solving.
Big-picture thinking.
Resilience.

That shift changes everything.

Because the goal was never to make neurodivergent children fit in ...
it should be helping them thrive.

How different would education look if we taught to strengths first? 🫶🏼

Some days remind you exactly why you do what you do.

Being invited to the Made By Dyslexia premiere in London was one of those moments.

To stand in a room full of people changing the conversation around dyslexia and to bring along some of our wonderful Poppy’s Tutoring families and the lovely @thattutor.uk felt incredibly special.

Dyslexia is not a weakness.
It is not a lack of intelligence.
It is often simply a different way of thinking that has been misunderstood for far too long.

When we stop trying to make children fit one system and start building learning around how they think, everything changes.

Confidence comes first.
Progress follows.

Awareness creates understanding.
Understanding creates confidence.
Confidence creates progress.

And that is why conversations like these matter so much 🫶🏼
