It's GRAMMY® season!

If you happen to be a voting member of the Recording Academy, please take a moment to listen to Momenta's world premiere recording of Carnatic String Quartet by the esteemed American composer and music theorist Robert Morris (b. 1943), released by @new.world.records, and consider casting your vote in our and Robert Morris' favor!

It's on the ballot in these two GRAMMY® categories:
-Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance: Momenta Quartet
-Best Contemporary Classical Composition: Robert Morris: Carnatic String Quartet

Even if you are not a voting member of the Academy, some of you may have heard us perform the Carnatic String Quartet live at the @eastman.school or at our 2023 #MomentaFestival. It's a powerful piece of music, and a milestone in Robert Morris' output, as it seamlessly combines his deep knowledge of South Indian Carnatic music with his rigorous approach to Western contemporary classical composition in a completely unique way.

REPOST from @Flotation_Device_KBCS:
Broody music takes the spotlight tonight as we explore works inspired by Samuel Beckett and Albrecht Dürer. We’ll contrast Charles Dodge’s realization of Beckett’s Cascando (made using 70s-era synthesized speech) with Trevor Bača's new rendition of Stirrings Still with narrator Paul Griffiths and the @JACKQuartet. We'll follow the Irish connection to Donnacha Dennehy's new piano concerto “Limina”, while Harrison Birtwistle covers Dürer with his clarinet concerto Melencolia I (named for the master's famous allegorical engraving). The late Phill Niblock continues the clarinet focus in the premiere recording of a work for multitracked bass clarinets, while Geof Bradfield and Ben Goldberg lead a double-clarinet quartet with Myra Melford and Dana Hall. Wadada Leo Smith and Angelika Niescier offer their own all-star trios. We’ll celebrate Ned Rothenberg’s cross-cultural music for his 70th birthday, while revisiting Morton Feldman’s obscure piece Orchestra for its 50th. A new solo cello composition by Salvatore Sciarrino extends Feldman’s flirtation with silence, while Ming Tsao adds a dissonant line to Bach’s Two-Part Inventions and Birtwistle does likewise with a Machaut ballade. Cheer-Accident unveils their first live album ever, and the premiere recording of a colorful orchestral work by the underrated 20th century composer Elsa Barraine rounds out this wide-ranging program.

Sunday, September 13, 10pm–Midnight PDT (GMT -7), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). Available in podcast format (with HQ audio) at Mixcloud.com. Creative and improvised music with host Michael Schell.

John Seman is back with “The Uncommon Americanism of Mel Powell”: a salute to this student of both Willie “The Lion” Smith and Paul Hindemith who recorded his neoclassical compositions for the Vanguard jazz label before working on Tom and Jerry cartoon scores, building one of the first electronic music studios, and winning the Pulitzer Prize as a modernist composer—a quintessential “20th Century American Composer”. We’ll also explore those same threads with tape pieces by Luigi Nono and Polish composer Bogusław Schaeffer, a new remix of the JACK Quartet by bassist/composer Nick Dunston, and extended selections by the Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra, Hedvig Mollestad’s Weejuns trio, plus a nod to the late Wally Shoup for his birthday with help from long-time associates Bob Rees, @Reuben_Radding, Paul Flaherty, @ChrisCorsano and Thurston Moore.

Sunday, August 16, 10pm–Midnight PDT (GMT -7), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). Available in podcast format (with HQ audio) at Mixcloud.com. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world.

✏️ Wrote a new SUBSURFACE SOUNDINGS column for Offside's Midsummer issue. ▪︎ 1,900 words worth of record reviews held together by a loose understanding of sentence structure and a passionate use of the comma. 📰

Thanks to all of the artists for braving the conditions suffered while making creative music in America. Thanks to the record labels for publishing challenging works of art without the promise (or even prospect) of a financial return. Thanks to Offside for printing the incoherent babbling of a middle-aged monk who refuses to attend temple. And thanks to you, dear reader, for looking further into these records that I recommend so highly. ✨️ Drop the anchor, stop swabbing the damn deck, and feed the pigeons swarming overhead until their stomachs explode above you. Life is a beautiful gift.

Flotation Device is turning 25 this weekend, and I'm pleased to be sharing the mic with my co-host John Seman, our former host Christopher DeLaurenti, and Jonathan Lawson who co-founded the show in July 2001 under the influence of such "guiding angels" as Alice Coltrane, William Parker, John Zorn, Pauline Oliveros and Giacinto Scelsi, all of whom will appear on the playlist of this special anniversary celebration, along with younger exponents of intentional and improvised music, including @VisibleCloaks, Cheval de Frise, @EllenMFullman and more. We'll also mark the 70th birthday of Bang on a Can co-founder Michael Gordon with a selection of his recent sound-cloud and classic postminimalist compositions.

Album of the Day: Lukas Ligeti - Notebook ( @new.world.records )

Find it here: https://theatticmag.com/news/2530/the-monthly-dig-_-march-2026.html

@lukasligeti ’s Notebook is several things: an album and an ensemble, but also a creative practice and an ongoing series of pieces, all situated in the liminal space “somewhere between composition and improvisation.”

As a creative practice, Notebook is Ligeti’s evolving methodology for creating conditions in which structure and spontaneity blur and overlap, manifesting his musical voice while also giving players a great deal of expressive agency, as musicians who are willing and able to “think aloud.”
