The Surrey Artist of the Year 2026 competition closes at midday this Friday 😬

So far I've been unable to get any of my family and only a tiny handful of friends to travel to Farnham and vote so I'm putting it out there and asking for some last minute help please

If you can get to New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham before midday this Friday (I know, I know...) then please pop in, have a look at all the amazing work and vote (ideally for my work 😉)

The awards are this Friday evening. I'll be in jeans and a jumper - come and say hi 😊

At the heart of Farnham's creative community, New Ashgate Gallery @newashgate champions contemporary craft and visual arts through exhibitions, events and community projects.

The gallery is also behind Craft Your Year 2026, a free programme of hands-on workshops taking place throughout the year, giving people of all ages the opportunity to discover new skills and explore both traditional and contemporary crafts.

Inspired by the dynamic interplay of light, colour and pattern found within nature these ceramic pieces are painted with delicate gradations of colour and intricate tessellating shapes positioned precisely around each vessel.

Image 1. Reflection - The dappled effect of light reflected on the water surface is the inspiration for these pieces. Decorated with a mosaic of diamond shaped colours with triangular shapes of transparent glaze.

Image 2. Flow - Zig zags bend, split and wrap around each diamond shape like linear ripples around pebbles in a stream.

Image 3. Crystal - Decorated with an optical lattice framework. The 3D diamond pattern has a glassy transparency inspired by the facets and colours found within crystals.

They are part of my new collection made since winning Surrey Artist of the Year 2025 and are currently on display @newashgate in Farnham until 7th November. A big thank you to everyone at the Gallery for displaying my work so well. Click on the link in my bio for more information.

The excitement is building at the Gallery as voting for Surrey Artist of the Year 2026 comes to a close at midday on Friday 23rd October and the announcement of the winner that evening. Good luck to all the shortlisted artists!

The month of October brings together a diverse selection of exhibitions, workshops, talks and events taking place @newashgate across the whole of @farnhamcrafttown. My free drop-in workshop at the gallery takes place on Tuesday 27th October, 11.00pm- 3.00pm. Info below- all levels welcome…. hope to see you there!

‘Unlock your creativity and discover how to turn your imagination into reality with clay and colour! Experience the technique of ‘sgraffito’ using specialist tools to carve a series of grooves through a thick layer of colour to reveal the clay below enabling you to create your own unique decorative tile.’

Here are some tiles made by my students in previous workshops and one of my own examples using this technique which is now on display @newashgate

Rainbow Roar on Downing Street is colourful, quirky and packed with pieces from local small businesses. It is a colourful treasure trove supporting over 100 small indie brands, making it the perfect spot to pick up an original handcrafted piece.

Paint your own pottery at Ceramics Cafe. It is the ultimate escape to slow down and create something entirely your own.

Head over to West Street to Elphicks, where you can find their Haberdashery upstairs, by Heidi. It is a paradise of luxury autumn wools, premium yarns and gorgeous fabrics. And all the buttons and ribbons..

Opposite Elphicks is the place to stock up on premium art supplies, Pullingers. Whether you’re a pro or starting a new hobby for Craft Month, as one of Farnham's oldest businesses, it has everything you need.

If you are out and about this week, you can also browse stunning local art at the New Ashgate Gallery for their Surrey Artist of the Year exhibition, or head to the Museum of Farnham this Thursday evening for their free, family friendly Zine Making Workshop.

Farnham truly comes alive this month. Grab a brochure in town, support an independent business, and let’s celebrate our local makers.
