“I can’t imagine The Big Sea coming out of somewhere other than the North Sea fringes,” says The Big Sea’s Chris Nelson. “We have a familiarity with the bleak industrial landscapes, the flaring chimneys, the stench of industry, the polluted waters. Growing up surfing in the North East there’s a discomfort to it, that biting cold breeds a thick skin and strong spirit that is not so common in the sun drenched hills and golden sandy beach towns of SoCal.”

There’s a drive and determination to overcome hurdles that is bred into the North Sea tribe, that imbues them with the ability to keep going against the odds. There’s also an innate sense of community, a support crew that’s there to pick you up in the pre-dawn darkness on the coldest of mornings so you don’t miss the low tide, an empathy for the underdog forged in a region often overlooked and under considered. It is no surprise then, that it is in Lewis and Chris’s homelands that The Big Sea has resonated so deeply, a place where wetsuits matter, but the power of community matters too.

So it is an honour to be bringing The Big Sea to the @northseasurffilmfest on Saturday 28th March. We’ll all be there - @approachinglines , @lewisarnold.surf @imaybesurfing to share the film the journey and the campaign with the crew from Northumbria in the north to Lincolnshire in the the south - the hardy souls of the Eastern fringe - at this inaugural creative celebration.

This is not just a film about wetsuits. At its heart, it’s a story of the power we have to effect change when we come together as a community. If you’re a surfer, a swimmer, have a wetsuit, an interest in the environment, making change, the power of community, storytelling, the ocean, activism and everything in between, we’d love to see you there.
