Gathering is probably my favourite sewing technique. Not just for the pretty, soft, voluminous ruffles it creates, but for the deeply satisfying, almost meditative process of slowing down to sew even, frustration-free gathers.

But it wasn’t always this way!

I remember when I used to *dread* gathering. The threads snapping, the puckers, the time it inevitably took… 🥵 The only thing that kept me going was how much I loved the finished effect.

Over time, I got better (read: more patient!) and discovered a few crucial tricks that transformed the whole process. And these are exactly the kinds of things I’ll be sharing in my sewing workshops at Liberty.

Alongside a dedicated “Learn to Love Gathering” masterclass, many of my other workshops will feature gathering as part of a project, so you’ll have the chance to practise as you go and benefit from all those years of me figuring things out the hard way!

Because sometimes, the difference between a sewing technique you dread and one you genuinely enjoy comes down to a few small changes ✂️

Snaps have been added and it was a job! The fabric is so thick I didn’t think it would work out but managed to make it happen. I’m happy with the result though. In need of a press but quite pleased with this very pink pinafore!

I also changed the execution here. The original pattern had belt loops but when I tested them it just didn’t sew well (very thick heavy fabric) so I added thread loops with embroidery thread instead.

The #fibremoodelva with quite a few modifications - this is why I love sewing my own!

- Removed some of the ease from the under sleeve and side seam. It was very big!
- Placed the sleeve tie casing on the inside so it encased the seam - no need for any visible seam on the inside so a much nicer finish.
- Used eyelets for the tie openings (sleeves and hem).
- Cut 2 back yokes and encased both the yoke and shoulder seams, just like a regular shirt
- Used a larger seam allowances for the sleeve so they could be self covered on the inside and topstitched down, again just like a regular shirt, also results in a very neat finish.
- Shortened the front and gradually curved to the original length at the back (there was just too much fabric which drowned me).
- I made a mistake sewing the placket with the wrong seam allowance so had to introduce a seam down the middle of it. Not the end of the world, I made the best out of the mistake.
- Added a detachable neck bow that mimics the shape of the collar and is held in place with buttons.
- Used ties instead of elastic at the hem so I can have it loose and layer over.

Not the best picture but back yoke sewn as per a traditional shirt (2 pieces with the back and shoulder sandwiched between them).

Ties encased with an eyelet opening (have to consider construction order this way).

2 small buttons hold the neck tie in place.

A small button on the neck tie and a thread chan on the shoulder to keep the neck tie in the right position.

The mistake in all its glory. I think I saved it. If I had enough fabric I would have redone the front piece but I didn’t. I also did self covered buttons as I couldn’t decide what to go with.

Out for a drink. It is billowy but it’s an easy to wear contemporary shirt courtesy of a pattern from #fibremood magazine issue 40.

Isn't it strange how some things happen?
We had a succession of 'weirdly beautiful' moments this weekend, with our beautiful Mama Chrissi.

My sister Gina brought her to @newcrafthouse fabric shop in Hackney, for a surprise. It's an amazing fabric shop that does sewing courses, sells vintage fabrics and all sorts of other fabric treasures. People come from all around.

They took Mum's fabrics from around the world (often picked up by my Dad on his travels), that she used in her fashion business CiBi.

She didn't know they'd all be there and we had a very special morning with the staff there. But the coincidences were wild....

Weirdly beautiful moments. The universe telling us something. Who knew there is a Bradbury Hardware Store?!

#sewfizzteacated26 outfit check! This is the @taukomagazine #ruckusdress which I saw @cazsews wear on the runway at the stitch festival… I knew then that I needed to make this dress!

I had always planned to make it in this @marybensonlondon tartan, however when I saw this black crepe back satin Vivienne Westwood deadstock fabric at @newcrafthouse … my creative hacking brain took over!! 😂

I pretty much did my own thing! I left off the front pocket an added in seam pockets both sides, I lined it but sewed the side seams as separates as I wanted the layers to move independently (joining at the ruching as I wanted them to do that together! ) I Split the colours at the seam for the front but as the back is one piece I kept that one colour.

I wore it with the hat I recently made in the @katherineelizabethmillinery Alice in wonderland challenge as it matched the vibe so well!! and obviously with boots from Vinted and made shiny by me! (@solely_cinderella ) .

I love this dress and have another planned…denim.. with maybe gingham searsucker fabric too?!?!

Swipe to the last pic to see Jean at the event in her version too, I love that she altered the neck line, I’d like to try that too. Hers is in a viscose so is a lot more swishy and moved beautifully. This is what I love about sewing my own clothes.. you can take a pattern and make it your own… Jean and I in the same pattern but totally different looks! 👍👌👌 how perfect is that x

Last Friday I walked the catwalk at @londonfrocktails 2026 in a self-drafted twist-front dress eked from remnants of deadstock stretch silk charmeuse from the wonderful @newcrafthouse. Thanks to @danieljames.photographic for the evidence! Swipe to see another Dan wearing the most attention-grabbing pleated trousers (pattern-drafted by me, though he did sew them himself!) inspired by the ones @ailsalyall made on @britishsewingbee. I met some lovely people in some fantastic outfits – what an inspirational night!

I’ve been keeping this one under wraps for a week or so 👀

I was lucky enough to be part of the tester group for the new Bennett Blouse by @designedbyenid and this is very much my kind of “jeans and a nice top” top.

The details are what make it — the ruffle collar and tie, the keyhole neckline, those absolutely enormous sleeves and the peplum frill.

I used a @libertyfabrics Tana Lawn paisley from @newcrafthouse that’s been sitting in my stash for a while waiting for the right make, and I’m glad I held onto it because it works so well with all the volume and detail in this blouse.

Enid is just working through the final tweaks from tester feedback now, with the Bennett due to launch later this month.

Thanks Enid for choosing me to be part of the tester group — I’ve really enjoyed making this one and putting it through its paces.
