I don’t care who fired you
How old you are
What your family said

What you want IS possible. Get clear on your skills and who you want to serve. Then be flexible about how it can show up and buy yourself some time.

Life doesn’t go from dream to dream to dream. There are often pit stops and detours along the way that require you to take the scenic route to your destination.

The ones who get there are not the smartest or the most talented, but the people who didn’t give up too early.

Every time I speak to groups my goal isn’t to inspire, but to rattle something so fiercely that they go home and choose to do something differently.

Thank you @womenjournos for the opportunity and partnership. I don’t take it lightly.

Are you really stuck or are you not considering unconventional options?

Tell young people what it really takes to navigate the real world. How you responded to rejection. What it took to convince people to give you a chance. The responsibility to help others along the way.

Just because something is hard, doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible. Just because it doesn’t happen in your way or on your timeline doesn’t mean it’s not on the way.

Maybe this reminder isn’t just for young people. ❤️

It’s okay NOT to be okay. 🤍

And that might be harder to recognize when the newsroom taught you that everything you’re experiencing is just part of the job.

The long hours. The constant deadlines. The pressure to perform no matter what’s happening in your personal life. The stories you carry home with you. The burnout you learn to push through. The fear that comes with all of the uncertainty.

We normalize so much that sometimes we don’t realize how much the work is affecting us.

When Diana Alvear joined us for The NEXT Best Thing’s What It Really Takes to Build a Career in Communications workshop, she talked candidly about what happened when she left news the first time.

She was so burned out that she didn’t have much left in the tank to start something new. She eventually realized she had a lot to work through before she could show up fully in a new career. And at the Rewrite, we see that in soooo many of you.

Diana’s advice? Take care of your mental health BEFORE you bring all of that unresolved baggage into your NEXT chapter. It will affect your ability to show up for new opportunities.

This is the quiet part that we don’t say out loud.

Your skills can come with you.
Your experience can come with you.
Your voice can come with you.

But you must leave the damage behind.

🙋🏾‍♀️ Most people can’t afford to go 6 months without a paycheck. That means if you’re looking for work you have to monetize your expertise WHILE looking for full time employment.

Money is a tool that buys you time. And you don’t need to be offered a salary with benefits, to get money in the door.

There are also a lot quicker and more lucrative ways to make money than trying to become an influencer when you’re out of work and the bills are due.

When you’re desperate you lose all leverage and negotiating power. So be very clear about your financial situation right now, and allow that to determine how to prioritize your NEXT step.

At The Rewrite/The NEXT Best Thing, we don’t think you can have an honest conversation about navigating today’s workforce without talking about money. And if it makes you uncomfortable…well that’s the point.

We don’t judge where you are. We want to help give you the tools to move forward. Sign up for our newsletter so you don’t miss our September workshop that addresses this very issue.

Being a workhorse doesn’t make you stand out anymore. AI can automate many of those tasks.

Forever journalist and Verizon hiring manager Diana Alvear stopped by The NEXT Best Thing to pull back the curtain on what it REALLY takes to work in corporate communications. She says rewriting your story through the lens of a strategic partner is the key way to demonstrate the value you would add to a team.

Our workshops create a blueprint to help you get a competitive edge in today’s changing workforce.

Three events. Three different audiences. One question keeps coming up. How do we prepare for what’s NEXT?

Tuesday, Aug 11th 6:30pmET: I’m hosting Networking That Gets You Hired with Shelly Lombard inside The NEXT Best Thing. We’re getting into what it actually takes to build relationships that can lead to opportunities, especially when the traditional job search is not working the way it used to.

Wednesday, Aug 12th 10:00amET: I’m moderating “We Didn’t Leave — We Led” at the Black Business Summit at Luminary. Black women keep getting pushed out of rooms they built. This panel is about what happens when we stop asking to be let in and start building our own.

Thursday, Aug 13th 2pmET: I’m moderating “How to Prepare Before the Unexpected Happens” at NABJ in Atlanta, where we’ll talk to journalists about building influence, creating options and making strategic career moves before newsroom upheaval makes the decision for you.

I’m just out here trying to meet people where they are, and help them flip the script on their careers. I hope you will join me virtually or IRL.

Check the stories, or send me a DM for a link to sign up.

The hardest part about today’s job market is that your work doesn’t speak for itself. You have to.

The days when your resume could do all of the talking are OVER! Today, people hire, refer, and recommend the people they know, trust, and remember.

That’s what, Verizon leader and forever journalist, Diana Alvear and I discussed during What It REALLY Takes to Build a Career in Communications workshop.

What makes most people cringe is realizing that YOU’RE the product.

If people don’t understand the value you bring, they can’t open doors for you because they don’t know you exist. You’re not being humble. You’re hiding.

You can’t rely on your company to be your megaphone.

Only showing up online to ask for jobs, then disappearing in the bushes like Homer Simpson, is not the move. You’ve done too much, worked too hard, and made too many sacrifices to stay quiet.

But we don’t just talk about navigating this changing workforce, we show you HOW inside The NEXT Best Thing. Those who signed up for this workshop, got tools they could apply directly to their career journey. We’ve already seen participants taking action.

This is your reminder to stop being the best kept secret

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that we have time.

Time to finally make the career change.
Time to start the business.
Time to become visible.
Time to make sure one decision at work doesn’t change our lives.

The truth is, life rarely slows down. We just get better at postponing the decisions that could change it.

@simonalexandero reminded us of this quote at a conference I recently attended, “Whatever you’re not changing, you’re choosing.”

For so many people, urgency doesn’t show up until life creates it for them. A moment that forces them to ask, “What’s NEXT?”

By then, they’re trying to build a bridge while they’re already standing in the water.

I’ve watched way too many incredibly talented people realize too late that they spent years investing in a job, but not enough in themselves.

Your experience matters.
Your expertise matters.
But your ability to communicate your value, become visible, and create opportunities beyond one employer has never mattered more.

Complaining gives us somewhere to put our frustration. Change asks something much harder. It asks us to stop waiting for the perfect time and start making decisions that our future selves will thank us for…TODAY!

The people I’m most excited to work with aren’t waiting for life to force the NEXT chapter. They’re creating options while they still have them.

What’s one thing you’ve been telling yourself you’ll do “later?”
