Man, what a day inside New York’s venture community with a group that came ready to learn. Our NYC Fall Venture Capital Tech Tour took athletes, entertainers, and changemakers through the city to meet the leaders in the game.

We heard from founders, VC partners, and CEOs on the cutting edge of biology, tech, and hospitality, and what stuck with the group was less about the specifics and more about the drive it takes to compete in venture, the same drive that got a lot of these folks to the top of their own field. You could hear it in the questions they asked, and on the walk to the next stop, where the conversation turned to what everyone’s working on now and what they want to build next.

The reality is Most startups fail.

And when athletes walk away from the game, suddenly everyone wants them in their deal.

You get invited to meetings, dinners. Introduced to founders. Sent pitch decks. Everything sounds like the next big opportunity.

But writing $25K, $50K, or $100K checks into individual early-stage companies is one of the fastest ways to burn through the capital you spent your entire career building.

If you want exposure to venture, understand the game: venture is a portfolio business, where it should only be a small % of your portfolio.

Invest alongside an established fund or team with a proven track record - one that spreads capital across 10 - 20+ companies, knowing most won’t become home runs.

You don’t need every investment to win. You need enough diversification for the winners to matter.

Protect your capital first. You worked too hard for it to treat investing like a casino.
