🌊 YEMAYA THE STORM

There is a moment in Omi Tutu: Cool Waters when the waters turn turbulent.

The storm comes.

And I have to let go and surrender.

Not just to the movement, but to something much greater than myself but to allow Yemaya, Oricha of the Sea, to fully embody me.

There is no hiding in this place. No performance. No control.

Only surrender.

It is one of the most humbling, raw, and truthful experiences I have ever known as a dancer.

To allow the waves to move through me…

…the power, the protection, the vastness of the ocean.

🌊

Performing Omi Tutu: Cool Waters on Maui has been a dream come true.

Maui has been part of my dance journey for more than two decades. To finally bring this sacred offering full circle…

…to share this work with the Maui Dance Community, my ʻohana, and the waters that have inspired so much of my life and work has been deeply moving.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude to the Maui Dance Community for continuing to nurture, support, and hold space for dance and cultural practice on this island.

Mahalo to ProArts Playhouse for supporting Omi Tutu: Cool Waters and giving this work a home on Maui. ❤️🌺

This is Yemaya.

This is Omi Tutu: Cool Waters.

A sacred offering to the waters, to the Oricha, and to the people and places that have held me along this journey.

Omi Tutu: Cool Waters
Created & performed by Kimberly Miguel Mullen
In collaboration with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Craig Renaud
