POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Piggybacking off of a post from my buddy @nickiaconogolf yesterday where he discusses the impact of upper body position relating to the lower body and timing the segments together.

A junior student today has always had an issue with overspinning the hips by the time he strikes the ball (“impact”). We measured him and he was only turning back about 10-15 degrees in the backswing. So we gave him a BIGGER hip turn in the backswing and that changed his hips position at impact from being 75+ degrees to about 40-45 degrees. This massively improved his ball striking.

When you have a student that is OVERSPINNING you have a few options…
1 - Maybe try to slow the hips slightly, but I often find this to be the wrong move and takes away the player’s natural ability to use the ground (we measure this using @swingcatalyst force plates). This is what MOST instructors do!!
2 - If the hips turn is limited in the backswing like his was… increase the backswing turn so the hips have further to travel before impact. This will often times improve the sequence and timing of the upper and lower body.
3 - Increase the ROTATIONAL speed of the upper body. Increasing upper body speed will typically decrease rotational speed of the lower body.

What have you done to try to match up your upper and lower body??? COMMENT below…

Union Jack Whaley — US Am Champion.

What an awesome week and incredible privilege to capture history in one of the greatest cathedrals of golf. I’ve spent years looking forward to it. Gave it everything I had and will forever look back on all of the images very fondly. Thank you to the @usga for the opportunity, the Merion staff who did an excellent job, and many of you who have spoken kindly about my work over the last seven days. See you in 2030 🇺🇸 🏆

Sharing this special place with friends, family, and the entire golf world this week. Kudos to the Merion team and the @usga for putting on quite the show for the US Amateur! And I might be biased, but I’m not sure there’s a course in the world that looks quite as exceptional on television. ⛳️

📈 Nick Iacono highlights a common misconception: that golfers should accelerate through the ball. Data from SAM PuttLab shows that elite putters are typically not still accelerating after impact, and forcing acceleration often leads to poor speed control.
