Season 9 Ep. 16 - Mark Neeley Cincinnati, OH-based animator, illustrator, journalist, and longtime Aquarium Drunkard collaborator Mark Neeley has blessed viewers with iconic illustrations and awesome animations for several years. Having released his debut animated short “Fragments” (2020) and the minute-long masterpiece “Pure Animation for Now People” (2024), which featured sounds from the great Mark Mothersbaugh, Neeley returns to the drawing board with an aquatic adaptation of the 1964 underground classic “The Clambake Mutiny.” Based on the children’s book by Jerome Beatty Jr. and Tomi Ungerer, the salty scene takes place on Monhegan Island in Maine, where locals celebrate a car-free living lifestyle against the barnacled backdrop of 1604 as a designated lobster conservation area. With music by Jim Putnam (Radar Brothers and Maids of Gravity), field recordings of the Atlantic by Nick Keeling, and a splendid narration by our mutual friend Spencer Cullum Jr., “The Clambake Mutiny” is Neeley’s most ambitious work thus far in his career, but a peaceful picture that’ll surely connect you with your innermost child charisma and fundamental fascination with the natural world. Set for release in mid-November. Available wherever you get your podcasts.

Sometimes life is mostly music, trains and film grain. I think most of this is Ilford 3200 b&w.

Film is complete. This is all of the frames. It was animated partly on green animation paper imported from Japan, partly on regular white. I’m proud of it and think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. It’ll be out by the end of the year with an original soundtrack, aquatic field recordings (oceanic in Mexico, river in Ohio & bathtub) and special voice narration. It’s an adaptation of a book from 1964; I acquired copyright access from the late author’s family/estate. 🦞

Scenic Photo-Tone Miniatures - Japan, 2025 While in Japan, I conducted field recordings and film photography across Honshu and Hokkaido. This scenic packet includes a cassette of those recordings alongside 18 correlating views. This project was designed in tribute to souvenir view packets commonly found a century ago. The packet and photography were risograph printed by Cereal Box Studios using two colors selected to best reflect the scenes. Risograph printing originated in Japan via the Riso Kagaku Corporation. The packet was die-cut by Otto Printing. The 45 minutes of audio were edited exclusively on cassettes and duplicated in real time to preserve fidelity. First 20 tapes use 1985 Maxell Type 2 XLII / UDII, manufactured in Japan. Second 20 tapes use 1985 TDK Type 2 SA90, manufactured in Japan. Edition of 40 $40 DM for purchase Dedicated to the Venerable Satoko Kitahara "Maria of Ants Town"

Oh yeah you betcha PATIENT COUNCIL is back from winter hibernation with two shows here soon. FIRST, this Friday at @westsidevenue a collaboration will be held between @ploughsharehn and myself. We will be unleashing an incomprehensible realm of dark ambient audio horrors upon the audience, along with new electribe noize @twigged_out and the dangerously underrated Cincy hypnagogic ambient legend in the making, @bomb_erotica ! SECOND, KROGER WARS (@nickkeeling_rail and @private_selection_deli_tracker ) will be unleashing an evening of noisy totalitarian grocery warfare upon Northside at General Store (print studio between Boxelder and the tat shop) to celebrate their new tape release, along with amplified glass noise rippers Black Corolla (@rotolimbs and @yoga4dogs ) and yours truly. If there’s any show you don’t want to miss it’s this one! This is going to be a very interesting month, I hope to see you! #cincymusic #diymusic #harshnoise #experimentalmusic #cincydiy

maria chavez abstract turntablism workshop and performance with nick keeling presented by talk low 3/4/26 @wavepoolartcenter 3/5/26 @swell_art_cafe maria's sound art involves physical material, chance and coincidence. in an analogous process, i took these photos on 35mm film that was color tinted in unexpected ways. after they were developed i sandwiched them using cross dissolve lightening and darkening. luckily, the portrait of maria was at a point on the film roll where it developed with a purple tint, which was perfect for that moment maria chavez : @chavezsayz nick keeling : @nickkeeling_rail talk low events : @talklowfest

Cinci’s own @nickkeeling_rail will bring his reel-to-reel piano compositions to @swell_art_cafe on 03.05 opening for Maria Chavez. Photos and design by @tommyluensman and @theawecincy About Nick: “Nick Keeling is a sound artist and composer based in the Ohio River Valley. A classically trained pianist with a passion for history, Nick explores topics of entropy, decay, and memory using musical instruments and home audio equipment salvaged from industrial America. His work is anchored in fragile magnetic tape recordings, balancing classical composition with ambient soundscapes. His pieces weave together collapsing layers of piano performance, field recordings, and audio tape loops. Nick has presented performances and installations in a multitude of spaces including factories, abandoned railroad tunnels, Masonic halls, and living rooms.
