Chessie's returns this Sunday.

This time, the very small coffee house will be hosted at our home in Fairview. The garage, where I roast the coffee, was converted into a cafe. Other parts of the house, including the hillside veranda, offer additional seating.

Fresh coffee, of Ethiopian and Guatemalan origins, will be individually brewed.

To celebrate the beginning of autumn, each serving is paired with homemade apple cheesecake, made with apples from my favorite local orchard, Beiersdorfer Orchard.

I am thrilled to announce my new film The Clambake Mutiny - an animated adaptation of the undersea children’s book from 1964, illustrated by Tomi Ungerer, a major influence of mine.🦞 🌊

It debuts at the @phillyanimationfest and is my most ambitious project and took close to two years to complete - I was granted copyright access from the family of the author Jeromy Beatty Jr. To match the book interior’s seagreen tones, and it was mostly animated on a pastel green animation paper sourced from Japan courtesy of @yohei.is.yohei

It is also my most collaborative project: the amazing @jimputnamjimputnam did the original soundtrack. Jim, the former leader of Radar Brothers, is a musical hero of mine.

@nickkeeling_rail worked his sound alchemy and recorded aquatic field recordings ranging from the Atlantic Ocean in Mexico to the Ohio River.

@spencercullumjr provided the story’s narration. When I animated a music video for Spencer a few years ago, we referenced old British animation like Roobarb & Custard. My niece Gianna, a budding visual art superstar, lended a hand

It will premiere online in mid-November following some festival screenings. There’s a very brief clip here. Can’t wait to share it with you 🦞

With special thanks to the following friends at @cafe.elliott, of which the film’s lobster dialogue was made for (due to complex copyright time constraints, the dialogue had to be cut). Their voices will be back on a future project and they’re some of my favorite people:

Chessie's, a very small coffee house.

For the past year, under the mentorship of my friend Rui Obara, I have been roasting and brewing coffee focused around dark roasts. This process requires different techniques, lending itself to the methods of Showa era coffee houses in Japan.

I would like to share this coffee with the public, so Chessie's is my opportunity to serve others. Fresh roasted coffee will be individually poured and each serving is paired with a homemade breakfast dessert.

Designer dishware for serving was chosen with purpose by Janet Speier.

Scenic Photo-Tone Miniatures - Japan, 2025

While in Japan, I conducted field recordings and film photography across Honshu and Hokkaido. This scenic packet includes a cassette of those recordings alongside 18 correlating views.

This project was designed in tribute to souvenir view packets commonly found a century ago.

The packet and photography were risograph printed by Cereal Box Studios using two colors selected to best reflect the scenes. Risograph printing originated in Japan via the Riso Kagaku Corporation.

The packet was die-cut by Otto Printing.

The 45 minutes of audio were edited exclusively on cassettes and duplicated in real time to preserve fidelity.

First 20 tapes use 1985 Maxell Type 2 XLII / UDII, manufactured in Japan.
Second 20 tapes use 1985 TDK Type 2 SA90, manufactured in Japan.

Glenway Park is a hidden gem of the vast Cincinnati Parks system. Locals know it as Tank Park due to the site hosting multiple water towers a century ago.

I'll be composing some spatial ambient sounds at the park for free yoga! Stop on by to to partake in yoga or to embrace this gorgeous neighborhood park.

As I conclude my time at the Lunkenheimer factory, I want to pay respect to the original purpose of this facility.

Lunkenheimer Valve manufactured the whistle of famous steamboat, The Delta Queen. In an effort to bring the sounds back to where they began, I played an amplified recording of the three-chime whistle in the heart of the Lunkenheimer Valve complex.

The source recordings, dating to 1966, are from the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. Narration is by Paul Long of Pittsburgh. The recording was amplified by PA speakers facing down Tremont Ave.

I'd like to thank the Captain of The Delta Queen, Don Sanders, for clarification on the history of this whistle.
