What else can we say about our friends at Castedosa…

And our friends in Broken Spindles….and our own Rocky Catanese….

We absolutely love them all. Relationships like these, and events like these are like an instant hit of the best dopamine anyone could ever want.

Huge thank you to Carlos, Stephanie, Dorian, Savannah, Joel, Eric, Rocky (and especially my boys Matt and Brian) for an unforgettable day and night.

Castedosa makes some of the absolute best guitars being made today and we are so excited to be their representatives here in NJ. This next chapter featuring their limited El Caballo, is super exciting. We will have our own limited/exclusive in Oxblood, with a tort guard and black plastics, so if this sounds up your alley, get at us to reserve a spot! We also have plenty of brilliant custom builds already in the queue including more Maravilla, Conchers, and different variants on the Mariana.

I was too busy having an amazing time to take lots of pics, but here are a few (and some fantastic video from Rocky and Broken Spindles).

Here until 6! Come say hey!

BOBBY DARIN’S breakthrough hit was a Rock and Roll song named, “Splish Splash” . Bobby was elated by the success of the record, although, he strived to be recognized as a more serious pop/swing crooner. Bobby achieved that success with “Mack the Knife” topping the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in October of 1959. He followed up with a swing version of a French song from 1946 called “La Mer”. The swing version, “Beyond the Sea” rose to the no. 6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. The song has been featured in TV Series, Movies, and a Commercial for Carnival Cruise Line. EDDIE COCHRAN, one of Rock and Rolls early pioneers, co-wrote SUMMERTIME BLUES in 1958 with manager Jerry Capehart in just 45 minutes! Cochran played all the guitar parts for the recording and used his voice as the deep spoken “adult” voice in the song. He also performed the rhythmic hand claps. Possibly also contributing to the rhythmic claps was girlfriend, Sharon Sheely, who also wrote Ricky Nelsons no .1 hit “Poor Little Fool”. SUMMERTIME BLUES became Cochrans breakthrough hit song peaking at no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has historically become a pioneering Rockabilly song and an anthem of teenage rebellion in the 50s. Many notable artists and bands covered the song such as Alan Jackson, The Who, and Brian Setzer (Stray Cats). Setzer even appeared as Eddie in the 1987 movie “La Bamba”. Eddie’s life was tragically cut short on April 17th, 1960 in a car crash on his way back to the airport at the conclusion of a successful European tour. He was only 21 years old. Cochran played an Orange 1955 Gretsch 6120, a single cutaway hollowbody guitar that has historically become immediately identifiable as the instrument that Cochran helped to popularize. EDDIE COCHERAN was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1987. #fyp #livemusic #rock #oldies #music

“BLUE SUEDE SHOES” is a pioneering example of the “Rockabilly” sound blending country music with Rhythm and Blues. It is one of the early examples generated out of Sam Phillips’s Sun Studios in the mid 50s along with songs like “ That’s All right Mama” (‘54) and “Whole Lotta Shakin’“(‘57).
There is a whole lot to unpack with “Blue Suede Shoes” so I will stick to the US chart success of both CARL PERKINS and ELVIS PRESLEY in 1956. PERKINS version did reach no. 1 on the Billboard Country and Western Charts. In both the Billboard best sellers (Pop) and the Billboard Rhythm and Blues Charts, the song peaked at no. 2. ELVIS kept Perkins from scoring the no. 1 spot on the pop charts with “ Heartbreak Hotel”. Two songs: “Long Tall Sally” (Little Richard) and “ Why do fools fool in love” (Frankie Lymon) kept Perkins version of the song from the top spot on the Rhythm and Blues Charts. The ELVIS version of “Blue Suede shoes” released on his debut LP, peaked at no.24 on the Billboard top 100. In ‘56, no.24 wasn’t considered a major success for ELVIS compared to his other releases that year (many reaching top 10 status and 5 reaching no. 1) However, historically speaking, the success of Elvis’ version of “Blue Suede shoes” is a whole other story…

EDDIE COCHRAN co-wrote “20 Flight Rock” with Ned Fairchild (lyrics) in 1956. The song made its debut in the 1956 film, “The girl can’t help it” before the record release in November of 1957. One interesting story surrounding the song involves A young Paul McCartney. Upon meeting John Lennon, who was at the time leader of the band “The Quarrymen”, Paul played the song. As a left handed player, he had to play a right handed guitar upside down. Lennon was impressed by the performance and the song earned McCartney a spot in the group that eventually evolved into THE BEATLES.

“LOVE POTION NO. 9” is a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller that was first recorded and released by the Clovers in 1959. Leiber and Stoller wrote more than 70 songs that hit the charts, mostly in the 50s and 60s. They wrote several hit tunes for ELVIS PRESLEY such as: Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, and Don’t, to name a few. They wrote for many other successful artists and groups such as BEN E. KING, THE DRIFTERS, THE COASTERS, etc. Although the Clovers were the first to release “Love potion No. 9”, it was The Searchers in 1964 charting the highest with the song hitting the number 3 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The Coasters released their version in 1971.

The mind-blowing return of The Mighty Paradocs last night at Solar Myth!

This was part of a one-off Rockers reunion – the monthly series co-founded by Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother that ran from 2005 to 2016 – which in turn was part of King Britt's @blacktronika: Philadelphia Now and Then week of events that wraps up on Monday. Also appearing last night were the always amazing Metropolarity crew and JJX.

Was an honor and a joy to be back in that space again. Rockers forever!

Also: they are making a documentary about the series and really the whole Philly Black and Brown punk / alt / whatever scene of the late 90s and early 00s. You can check out @rockers.est for more about that.
