Chef’s Pick EP. 6: @fatandflourla 🥧 This time, @chefjosefcenteno sent me to @fatandflourla in Culver City, a bakery and cafe by @nicole_rucker, best known for her pies made with seasonal ingredients and fresh produce. What to try: - Seasonal fruit pie - Pumpkin pie (my personal favorite!) - Banana cream pie - Key lime pie - Chocolate chess pie Beyond the pies, they also serve great sandwiches like egg salad and chicken Caesar. Stay tuned for my next episode where I’ll be trying @bridgetownroti! #larestaurants #lafoodie #lafood #chefspick #laeats

Continuing my journey through all five Fat + Flour banana bread recipes with this spicy streusel-covered banana bread! The spiced streusel is seriously addictive. The addition of ginger combined with the more ubiquitous cinnamon really gives this loaf that extra special something. I shared half this loaf with my brother who reported it was the best b bread he'd had! 🏆 Life lately has slowed down a bit from the absolute chaos of summer travel and I'm so, so grateful 😂 This year has been so crazy and I hesitate to say I've found anything resembling a routine but a mellower pace of life is feeling real nice. I'm so easily excitable and there are always a million things I want to do but I'm trying to let go of expectations and just do what I can. Letting go and living one day at a time have been massive lessons I keep getting slapped with this year LOL. The meme in the second slide felt too relatable! Anyone else? 👀 #bananabread #fatandflour #lettinggo

For years apple pie was the bane of my existence. Then, after doing it over and over again, I finally got good at it! The secret is confidence and you only really get that through practice. So roll up your sleeves, flour your cutting board, it’s time to get to work! You’ll be ready just in time for Thanksgiving. 🍎 🥧 #applepie #pierecipe #thanksgiving

A totálně nejlepší s kávou ☕. #fatandflourla #americanbaking #cookies #chocolatechipcookies🍪 #autumn

Yesterday, I brought this SOUR CREAM PECAN COFFEE BUNDT CAKE for students in my seminar, “The American City.” I offer this course every few semesters & I always thoroughly enjoy teaching it. After all, urban history & my obsession w understanding suburbia are big reasons why I became an academic. 🏡 This fall, I have an engaging group of students who impress me every class — what a delight! I figured a bundt would be great to share bc 1) you can bake it the night before since it holds well, 2) it’s substantial (esp w this one bc of all the pecans) & 3) it’s easily shareable & transportable (when sliced). Make a streusel w toasted pecans (the fresher the better, so I usually buy a container just before baking). Prepare the batter, which features sour cream (adding richness & moisture). There’s also buttermilk in the batter, which does the same as the sour cream. (I actually used full-fat yogurt, which I’ve found over the years is usually a good substitute for buttermilk.) Put some of the streusel mixture at the bottom of a well-buttered bundt pan. This, btw, will caramelize upon baking & will “attach” to the cake. Once flipped over, the top is nicely bronzed. It’ll also have a sticky “shell” of brown sugar-coated toasted pecans. Yum! Add some of the batter, then more streusel, then the rest of the batter. Place the pan in a cold oven, then turn on to 350. An hour & a quarter later: This beautiful bundt! Let it cool, flip over, then drizzle w a simple glaze of confectioners’ sugar & milk. Adorn w more streusel. Slice & thoroughly enjoy the cinnamon flavor... the tender cake... the caramelized edges w the now-candied pecans. Fantastic. ✨ Recipe from Fat+Flour by @nicole_rucker.

Screaming / crying / spending money on chocolate and vanilla in an irresponsible way all for the love of the treats! After holding on to this idea for years, writing two books and learning a lot about writing and recipes, I’m finally able to announce I’m working on another one covering the subjects that consume my dreams: CHOCOLATE AND VANILLA. Much thanks to @knopfcooks and @nicoletourtelot for believing in me! Prepare to be dazzled by two of the greatest ingredients in the universe. (Photos by @algastelum )
