Have you seen red, white, or blue squares on sidewalks across Arlington? There are 25 in total. Each features a word and date that marks a significant moment in Arlington's history. These images are part of a larger ArtsArlington-sponsored project by Arlington Artist Nilou Moochhala that commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

The words stenciled on the squares represent powerful stories that make connections between the past and the present. For example, “SERVE”, on the walkway in front of the Dallin Museum, honors the contributions of two Arlington veterans - folk hero of the American Revolution Samuel Whittemore, and Mike Alogna, who served in the Vietnam War as a skipper and team leader of Swift Boats.

Learn the meaning of each square by visiting us or other Arlington museums, libraries, and businesses where you can pick up free commemorative story cards. You can also visit artsarlington.org/timeline to read them all. A wonderful exhibit featuring all four of Arlington's 250th anniversary public art projects is on view at the Old Schwamb Mill through May 31, 2025.

Great day at the Menotomy Beer Hall with artist @niloumooch who filled a table with her postcards and stickers from Then & Now: An Arlington Timeline. She invited her daughter to create a face painting area and spent the afternoon talking with visitors about her innovative project pairing historic events and contemporary stories, illuminating the evolution of her hometown to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution!
