Nilra Zoraloglu presents her performance-lecture "Ground, Redrawn. An Experiment in Speculative Cartography" as part of our final Research Ecologies event for 2026: Restless Grounds, Ecologies of Memory and Matter (in English). Held in collaboration with EqualACT: Artistic Research, Make it Feminist!

🗓 29. September
🕙️ 10-5pm
📍 bat-Studiotheater, Belforter Str. 15, 10405 Berlin
🌐 For the full programme, see link in bio
👉️ Please register via equalact@hfs-berlin.de and let us know if you'll join for the full day, or part.

Nilra Zoraloglu’s performance-lecture explores how maps frame territory, making some conditions visible while leaving others out. Drawing on Frédérique Aït-Touati’s idea of a “moving Earth,” it asks how changing environmental conditions can be made visible when conventional maps tend to fix territory in place. The talk moves into an animated projection using climatic and environmental data, turning the room into a temporary space for experiencing change through scale, movement, and time.

Nilra Zoraloglu is a Berlin-based artist, architect, and spatial researcher working across architecture, ecology, soil, and experimental forms of spatial representation.

Featured in Art Africa, Issue 26: New Futures, “absent matter(s),” @artafrica_mag
.
.
Born from the New Futures Arts Collaborative, the exhibition gathers 16 international artists to explore the “absent but implicit.” From the abandoned mine shafts of Johannesburg to the tailings of Brazil, this is a collective inquiry into the voids left by industrial extraction—the “invisible gold,” the sulphuric mist, and the silenced histories embedded in our landscapes.

Last spring, I had the privilege of participating in an incredible art residency centered on deconstructing normative knowledge structures, promoting healing and interconnectedness, building community, and envisioning new futures and perspectives. Together, we explored our shared histories of dehumanization and found deep connection in acknowledging the harm carried across generations. Through radical love and care, we built a community that transcended individual egos and placed both humans and non-humans at the heart of our creative process. Our work reflected a collective responsibility to imagine a future rooted in justice, healing, and interconnectedness. It was an experience that truly restored a sense of wholeness within and beyond ourselves. Furthermore, it made me re-believe in myself as an artist. Rather than being suffocated by the expectations and injustices of individualism and capitalism, this residency helped me re-find my voice as an artist, allowed me to be ‘imperfect’ and vulnerable, evolve collectively with other artists who share similar visions of change, and work for new possible futures. I’m eternally grateful to everyone who made it possible ♥️🔥

Dive into hands-on creativity at the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial! Our workshops invite participants of all ages to explore, design, and shape the future of architecture through collaborative making and innovative thinking.

Trace Matter: A Slow Encounter with the Urban Soil
This hands-on workshop explores soil chromatography as a slow, analog visual technique to read the stories embedded in urban soils. By extracting color patterns from local earth samples, participants engage with the material and non-human world (microbes, minerals, histories) through attentive observation.
Inspired by artistic research practice “berl-birl,” we pause to listen to what soil reveals when we stop extracting and start relating. Participants will create their own chromatograms while reflecting on slowness as a way to mend systems, deepen urban knowledge, and cultivate care in the age of acceleration.

Hands On with Slaatto Morsbøl
In collaboration with the brick-cleaning company @nordstenaps, @slaattomorsboel invites visitors to “Hands On” to take part in the exhibition through a workshop where we will sense, play, select, mix, and cast. Master mason Max Kejser Mortensen will share insights from his company and his experiences with reuse in the construction industry.

Lecture & Workshop: Exploring the Art of Japanese Windows
In collaboration with the @windowresearchinstitute, architect and professor Taro Igarashi will give a lecture on the history of Japanese windows, focusing on their development and significance in both traditional and modern architecture. After the lecture, the Window Research Institute will demonstrate how Japanese Shoji windows made with washi paper are created. Here, you can see and experience the meditative process of traditional craftsmanship and the art of making windows by hand. We offer 20 participants the opportunity to actively join the Shoji workshop. Selection will be made by lottery on the day.

EN: At COP30, VAZIOsobreTERRA asks: How can we return to the land and to each other? Not in a nostalgic way, but radically. (Rolando Vázquez)

Our exhibition unfolds through two movements: Endless Futurity, exposing the illusions of neoliberal models and the wounds caused by extractivism; and Repair and Regeneration, highlighting other ways of coexisting and imagining futures shaped by plurality, ancestral and youth, arts and science, culture and climate, where hope becomes practice and path.

At the core of both lies one goal: to co-create escape routes.

To co-create an emergency exit is to invite local knowledges and processes that challenge hegemonic ideologies around energy transition and so-called sustainable development. It is a way to return to the land and to each other.

EN:
VAZIOsobreTERRA is the second activation of Absent Matters.
The exhibition and program address the conflicts of mining and its multidimensional impacts, on both local and global scales. They place lived experiences in dialogue with artistic and cultural action.

The first activation took place in South Africa in May and June of this year, bringing together more than fifteen artists from eleven countries, connected through narratives about the direct and indirect consequences of mineral extraction.

In November, the VAZIOsobreTERRA circuit will occupy Belém during the context of COP30, weaving together works and art activations with local artists and emphasizing the urgency of culture as an ally in the fight against the climate crisis.

See a preview of the next activation in the photos of this post!
