All the queers being sweet at the QFD Community Art Show at @common_area last week ~ Join us for an artist panel and discussion TOMORROW (Saturday, October 17th) 2-3pm at @common_area !! We’ll talk queer performance + affinity & DIY art spaces with Kim Selling & Rya Wu. Kim is a model, artist, and vintage clothes monger who has graced many queer figure drawing circles. Rya is an artist, QFD-model, and founder of @thefishbowl where QFD found a home for many sessions.

This panel discussion is open to everyone, regardless if you’ve participated in QFD in the past, and is part of the month-long community art show that’s up at @common_area October 9-30th 💌

What a wonderful opening night at ACES // Artists of Color Expo & Symposium! ✨

The opening night was magical, filled with beautiful art everywhere you looked, vibrant live painting, and the chance to connect with so many talented artists and incredible people in our creative community. 🥂🤝

If you visited us this summer, you know our walls have been filled with a lovely range of artwork. As we wrap up the last few weeks of summer, allow us to once again honor the winners from Best of Gage and all the amazing artwork that came out of this past year. We’re always looking forward to what’s to come and we encourage you to keep up to date on all these emerging artists and to follow their accounts, stories, art, journeys, etc.

Also, huge shout out to Pamela Belyea for letting us borrow and display 50 years of self-potraits from Gary Faigin. His work reminds us daily that artists are made, not born.

Oil on canvas, this painting draws from Larissa Lai’s sapphic reimagining of the Nuwa legend in Salt Fish Girl. Nuwa—among the oldest Chinese deities and a progenitor of humankind—shapes people from clay to keep her company in an empty universe, a myth carried through millennia of cultural memory. Against modern Western assumptions that frame China as inherently homophobic, the work points to long histories of normalized queerness across early dynasties. By depicting Nuwa through this lens, Ning positions queerness as ancient and irrefutable within Chinese culture, affirming a simple truth: queer people have always been here.

There is a degree of melancholy in the beauty of today’s trio. The preciousness of nature...its fierceness and frailty, unmatched. “Ox Head” by Ning Wan feels like an underwater, submerged scene, yet sacred like a shrine- with a regal centaur type creature (and we are underwater in terms of our indifference toward beasts and nature). The work carries an ethereal aura that continues with John Diephouse’s photograph “ Summer Breeze” a tiny moment of transformation captured in lyrical expression! While Susan Aurand’s “Necessary Conversation” urges us to listen and suggests that secrets are passed among all living things in her stunning painting. These 3 artists have captured the poignancy of this important moment on the planet in a breathtaking way. I am captivated by these works. Please look closely, as the symbolism floats like clouds in the psyche...
